The Producers of The 1UP Show form Area 5: Launch new show "CO-OP"

The first episode of our new series: CO-OP.

Head over to our YouTube channel and subscribe! We're trying to get into the YouTube partner program and for that we need a critical mass of viewership. Click the Digg link! Tell your friends! Run naked through your neighborhood with Area5.tv painted on on your back!

All of our friends come by to talk about the games they loved from 2008. We don't pick a winner, we just let everyone chime in on what drew them in and what kept them coming back for more. Who, you may ask, were kind enough to lend us their big brains and their precious time? John Davison, Dan Hsu, Shane Bettenhausen, Greg Ford, Michael Donahoe, Giancarlo Varanini, Nick Suttner, Anthony Gallegos, Philip Kollar, Demian Linn, Andrew Fitch, Ryan Scott and then, of course, those Area 5 jerks. Cesar, Jason, and Rob did all of the shooting with the old cameras and JayFresh held a stick mic out there to capture sound. We live on a busy street so apologies for all the traffic sounds trying to drown us out.

And, yes, it is "Part 1." I know, I know, I hate "to be continued" as much as anyone (I'm looking at YOU, "Heroes") but we were faced with one of two possibilities--continue editing for another week on the only machine available to us, or get this out there. This is an epic show and even if it suffers a bit from poor sound gear and old cameras, the amount of people there gave us more than enough content to fill up two shows. Rather than fret over what to cut out and what to leave in, we're going for the two-parter approach as we feel we owe it to they who gave so graciously of their time and to you, our audience, who gave so graciously in general to get all the content out there. Also, I can't lie, we need a lot of time to talk to people about where this whole "business" thing of ours is headed and trying to shoot an entirely new show next week was seeming more and more impossible as time wore on, particularly due to our lack of gear. Thanks to your OVERWHELMING generosity and some lucky breaks, we think we can get the gear sorted in another week.

One big issue is the PayPal account. We received so many small donations in such a short time-span that PayPal apparently thinks we're doing something illegal and we can't spend any money from the account until it's been "reviewed"--which their polite customer service people told me could take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. Since we've already received our last paychecks and California is suffering a ginormous unemployment backlog this wasn't the good news.

So that's the yang. Here's the yin! We've actually received a donation in hardware that we think when combined with some old MacBooks that we're trying to get repaired/salvaged will give us just enough good stuff to get things really moving! We're once again floored by how much our work seemed to have affected people around the globe and this latest delightful happenstance has once again reaffirmed to us that we're on to something--even if we're not quite sure how we're going to make a living off it :)

We hope all of you that have been so patient with us will feel that the first episode of CO-OP is worth the wait.

WHY THERE IS NO ITUNES FEED

So Apple and iTunes have this thing that if you're a podcast you can't charge money. If we start as a podcast in iTunes we're stuck there forever. We would very much like; to continue to distribute CO-OP for free, but there are a million factors that will go into that and we're going to try to get into the "TV" side of iTunes to see if we can charge a small subscription fee. Will that happen? Honestly, we don't know. Will people subscribe? We don't know that either. For now, CO-OP is free.

FEAR IS THE MIND KILLER.

Area 5 is named after our favorite area of Rez. It's been impossible to measure the inspiration that game has had on us, personally, and on the industry as a whole. Also, we're stepping into the big, dark unknown by trying to make a go of it on our own and that is, quite frankly, scary. Time to take that inspiration even more personally.

UPDATE: Yes, there is a d/l link for the file. We're trying to get people to subscribe to the YouTube channel, but we know not everyone watches the show that way. There's a Vimeo version up now. You can download it from there if you have a login: http://vimeo.com/2904657

I nearly fucking cried at 1:40. You guys knocked it out of the park. Again.

I'd bet that a lot of people who donate to Area 5, The Geekbox, or RebelFM donate to all of them. Consolidating the way that people subscribe could leverage the space that you occupy in the mindshare of your fans. Good luck with the business model!

Man, it's nice to see the beginnings of a new show! Congrats to you all, I really really liked it, and can't wait to see the second half. I wrote up a quick little review of the first show. I thought you guys would like to know why I feel it was so outstanding! See ya'll next week!

I'm so glad you guys are back, I'm a huge fan!

That vid was amazing and I can't wait to see what else comes-out of Area 5!

Good luck!

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLuke

That was a great episode. I'll continue watching this for a long time as long as you guys keep making it.

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

I'm so glad you guys are doing a show. I've been missing the 1UP Show a lot.
One thing I'd like to point out up front, I do love the content you guys are making, but I don't feel like I live in a world where paying a premium to access a content is good.

Take Revision3, their revenue is advertisement based, you're fed a bunch of commercials but I'm willing to keep up with it if it keeps my content free.

Good luck to you.

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhoenixP3K

The content of the episode is great. Up the production values, namely sound quality, and I'll pay to watch. I higher-resolution version would be nice also.

Area 5 launches new show; CO-OP...

The former 1UP staff responsible for The 1UP Show have just launched the first project from their new company Area 5.
Check it out and support them.
......

Thank you so much for doing this.
When I heard that the 1UP show had been cancelled... I almost felt it as bad as some of you former 1UP'ers must have felt it.
So I really appriciate that you've made this new show that I definitely will be watching from now on.

Some feedback:
The video editing is really great and beyond what you did with the 1UP Show. I really love the split-screens and the better use of illustrative videoclips from the games you are talking about.
The sound mastering is...sub-par. That audiolevel for the videoclips is much, much too loud compared to when you are speaking. I had to fiddle with the volume control on my amp constantly to adjust for the massive differences in volumes.
The voices really need to be loud enough so that you can hear them easily. I know recording conditions weren't optimal, but I'd really appriciate a little more normalisation / compression... don't pop my ears! :-)

Anyway, thank you very much, I think you did a great job of creating this show, I think its going to be great and I very much look forward to seeing future episodes.

Fantastic 1st episode guys. Keep up the great work!

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhil

why dont you guys make a dot com and put adds on it for revenew

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGF Tank

Great job guys, and glad you're back. Looking forward to part 2, as well as figuring out the direction you're taking with the show and however ways we can support it.

I did subscribe to the YouTube channel but in the end opened a vimeo account to be able to download the file. The way it works on my side is I have all the video feeds and podcasts automatically downloaded to a specific folder on my computer and then, using WMP11(Windows Media Player 11) I stream all those feeds to my Xbox360. Since the Dashboard was updated last year the ability to stream h.264 videos in .m4v and .mp4 .m4a containers (no .mov support)files has been a godsend.

By default WMP11 will not be able to see nor play those files but, after installing ffdshow tryouts & Haali Media Splitter, you'll be able to play those files. For WMP11 to be able to automatically add those files to your library all you have to do is add a certain registry entry and all will be set.

I must say I found the video quality even better than on 1Up Show?? Nice! Great job guys.

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSechoDB

I like the Dune reference. And great episode, I'm glad you were able to get everyone back together for this.

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

Check out Never Not Funny (pardcast.com) -- Jimmy Pardo's managed to charge a subscription fee for his show. He gets onto iTunes by offering a free feed, which provides a teaser... and from seeing this first episode, I think a lot of people would download a CO OP teaser and end up subscribing. Good luck.

Hey guys,

Great 1st episode, I'm sure the show will continue to improve and hopefuly surpass the quality of the (excellent) 1UP show. A few comments:

As has been mentioned, the audio volume changed between some gameplay segments and the conversation segments - this required adjusting the volume on my comp to watch the show properly.

The content of the conversation is just as well 'selected'/edited as from the 1UP show - insightful opinions from the contributors without getting monologues that drag on.

The ratio of video of the person talking vs video of the other people in the room is excellent, as it was in the 1UP show.

The gameplay footage was good, and represented the games fairly well as far as I could tell. The music was similarly suitable. Again, just like the 1UP show.

I liked when the multi-camera segments showed a person talking and another person's behavioural response to them. Doing this gives both images more meaning due to increased context.

I think that when using multiple cameras/video of gameplay with video of people talking, you should try to stick to half screen images, rather than the varying ratios of image sizes used. It's annoying having to constantly 'find' where my eyeline should be if I want to watch something - and when a person's face is only taking up 1/4 of the image you're not getting much visual information anyways imo (check 16.10 for an example of what I mean, you can't even see Matt's whole head). By the same token, I think it'd be better if you stuck with 'gameplay video on the left, people on the right' rather than constantly mixing the relative horizontal positions up. Again, it's annoying having to keep on switching my eyeline to find what I'm trying to watch.

The horizontal split images are hard to watch - there isn't enough vertical screen real estate to properly see either image. This might be better with a higher resolution image though.

Anywho, I'm looking forward to the next episode, and I hope you guys are all enjoying the work!

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJim

@Jim -- thanks for the detailed feedback, man! While I disagree with your opinion on the varying splits, I nevertheless understand your points. Ryan's a much better dude to talk about this since that was his idea in the first place, but my inkling is that what you're feeling/noticing is at least mitigated by the short time-frames in which the split-screens are up. But, again, this is very valuable feedback and it will absolutely be taken to heart as this is the also the premiere of an experiment with a whole new style of shooting/editing for us and I'm sure it'll take a few more shows before it gels into something as silky smooth as The 1UP Show.

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermatt

Fantastic Job. Left me on a cliffhanger though. "Left4Dead" was sitting in the back of my head the entire episode.

The only gripe I have is what seems to be an image stabilization issue. You guys may want to get a fig rig. I've filmed a lot of scenes with it when a tripod wouldn't be mobile enough and I have to say - it's a life saver. If you guys need any help, drop me a line (my email address should be viewable to you - if not, hit up my website). I'm not a big budget kind of guy but I am a movie producer so "me casa, su casa" when it comes to the internet.

Thank you for doing this, it really means a lot. Not only have you have you named your site after my favourite game, you've kept a similar editing style and music as the 1up show. I am interested as to where this show is going once you guys get this up and running properly, it would be great to see some higher quality videos and I'd be prepared to pay some form of subscription for that.
Best of luck with the show!

January 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLewis G

The split screen is completely working for me. Footage and speaking and listening/reaction. I enjoy seeing all of these things and I have no trouble following any and all of it.

This is an absolutely innovative idea that makes other videogame shows utterly one-dimensional in comparison. I want to see footage. I want to hear discussion pertaining to the footage. I came to area5 to see these commentators. Not only that - it was used delicately and sparingly to good effect - amazing considering the production timeline on this first episode. Talk about a risk - I don't know if they had been playing around with this idea in the background, but to throw it out there on their launch production. I can't wait to see this idea expanded to panel zooming and panning as the situation warrants.

I didn't come to area5 to watch McLaughlin Group stage blocking - I go to McLaughlin Group for that. Absolutely brilliant use of split screen.

Keep it up guys. I'm willing to pay now so keep the shows coming.

January 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRobert

Just wanted to echo the sentiments expressed by most people here...

To use the word 'devastated' to describe how it felt during all that went down with 1up and EGM at the beginning of this month would be an understatement. The new show here at Area 5 is amazing, and I would definitely be willing to pay for future episodes; considering I and many others are (sadly) saving around $12 a year from cancelled EGM subscriptions, I'd be at least willing to pay that much a year for the one-of-a-king gaming content you guys provide here. Also, in addition to video shows, I'd love to see regular written updates on the site, including articles, news, reviews, and any other written content related to gaming (you're probably/hopefully planning on this already).

Great luck on getting everything established, and thank you for being so devoted to gaming (especially when it could have been so easy for all of you to just walk away, justifiably discouraged by the hands you were dealt).

January 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCJ

Just watched the first episode; I'm glad to see you're back in action and sharing your love for video games with the public once again. I'll be supporting you every step of the way.

January 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Vanderhoef

Long Time fan... Love everything that you guys come up with. I would gladly give you my EGM subscription money for a weekly show. I wouldn't mind at all. I was a real 1UP SHOW addict and considered it the best webshow ever! This show is awesome! Thanks for all the efforts and all of your wonderful experience and opinions. It's just too bad things like this take a lot of time, effort, and money to get going. Hope everything goes well. Good Luck!

You guys should try to get Jane Pinckard to make a theme song for Co-op.

January 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

This is great, I am so glad you guys have continued on with the spirit of the 1-up show. I can't wait for more of this, I know you guys wont disappoint.

January 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy

A new theme by Jane would "totally be the shit" as they say these days.

January 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterD3stiny_Sm4sher

You guys totally rock! I'm so glad that my favorite video-gaming show is back and kicking! Two years ago I saw an article that said this show has more video gaming content than a whole week's worth of G4. They were right, and I never looked back.

January 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

After a second viewing I must say you guys know how to set up a great shot. Every frame is aesthetically interesting. Can't wait to see what you guys have up your collective sleeve once you get rolling.

January 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhil

(Just gonna re-post my comment on your YouTube page over here)

I just wanted to say that I am so glad to see that you guys are back and doing something new. I was so sad to hear about the events at EGM and 1UP. To everyone involved at 1UP and EGM that were let go, I wish you all the luck in the world in whatever you do next-- and to the area5 guys, I'll be here supporting you all the way. I know you guys are gonna make something good out of this.

January 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkumo35

God damn. I nearly teared up when the entire 1up crew walked in.

January 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBen

Hey, Guys!
Love your work, and I would pay for the HD version of the show, however iTunes Video Store (i.e. movies, tv shows, etc.) works only in three-four countries around the world, so those of us who leave outside of those markets will be left out in the cold. I think there is another way of doing it by paid rss feeds, I don't remember any service that does that at the moment, but I know that they exist, like the one that RingtonFeeder uses, probably Garnett knows a few such services. It's much easier, you have to type in your user name and password in iTunes when you get the URL for the feed and that's it.

I like the format of the show so far, but it would be cool if you got out on the street and interviewed some gamers and non-gamers or did some gags like Shawn and Anthony did, surveying people about an imaginary game or putting people on the spot and asking them questions (like when Shawn left some shitty games on the street and he would jump on the people who picked it up with questions).

Take care and good luck.

January 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZem

To be honest, as much as I liked the 1-Up Show, the highlight of my week was the "1-Up Yours" podcast. Any chance of that being resumed under a different name?
