My First Skate 2 Video: Christ, One More Time
matt chandronaitAs you've likely gathered, we're really busy here at AREA 5 HQ. At the moment, we're cutting a new Snack and an episode of CO-OP, preparing to premiere a new regular column with some fresh perspectives, and trying to learn how to be real-life business men. My stomach is all battery acid and butterflies, while my head is in the clouds. If I didn't lock myself into my editing machine daily, I might not make it through the day. I suppose I could always play games.
My task yesterday was to capture all the specific pieces of direct-feed footage I'd need to make the Skate 2 segment from the upcoming episode of CO-OP as perfect as I'm capable of. It took a bit longer than I thought it might; recording an acceptable run through the Mega Compound kept me occupied for more than two hours.
You don't really realize how many times a human can smash L1 while stabbing UP on the d-pad, per minute, until you're well into the second hour of such a marathon of simple repetition. "That's the one. Wait... no. Rewind. That transition is a bit sloppy. Again! Fuck. One more time." It was the most fun I've ever had with Skate.
The best of those sequences was recorded, and appears below. What you'll see is the not the raw gameplay footage though. Jason and Rob convinced me to take the run into the editor accessible from the pause menu in Skate 2 so I could choose my own camera positions. The embedded video is the best I could do with the off-the-shelf controls.
I remembered that EA had announced the Filmer Pack for Skate 2. It's a piece of premium DLC that unlocks much of the functionality of the editing tool. When I found this video that shows off what you can do with the DLC, the three of us were bummed. I wanted to place free cameras by hand! We missed the simple color-correction options we had in the original Skate!
I guess I need to decide whether or not I support this type of microtransaction. My gut reaction was negative. Maybe extended use of the existing tool will make the purchase seem worthwhile. But right now, I need to hold all the dimes, nickels, quarters, and space bucks I can.

Is there a feed that just has the video content in it? I want only the co-op stuff and possibly the snacks to show up in my reader, not the general site updates.

ON another note, i bought the pack. The only reason i love the skate videos, and being able to share them.
Should this of been in the retail copy? YES.
But EA loves the micro transactions, Godfather, NFS. Its crazy.
But i bought it, like i said i love this feature!
Oh yeah collecting footage can sometimes be very hard, the worst I've had to deal with is a mod for Battlefield 2 called Project Reality. Its a fantastic mod as in it forces you to play with teams and work under one command. The problem is that collecting exciting footage is very hard, ie your not always in the right position for collecting footage or you play an entire round (some lasting up to 2 hours) and not getting anything exciting. That being said I ask you to name me one game where you can have fun repairing other peoples tanks for 2 hours.
Anyways keep up the great work, you show an the old 1up show always gets my creative side going. Thanks again! :D

Damn, that was a nice run. I still haven't picked up skate 2 yet.. and I really, really want to now.
I'm impressed. I just started playing this game yesterday. It's my first Skate game and it shows. It takes me 2 hours to finish a challenge that requires me to grind 2 rails in a row.
You guys have no business experience whatsoever, right? Once you've gotten the business all set-up and ready to go, I think it would be really interesting for you to blog about what was involved in getting this operation started. Maybe it's just me, but behind-the-scenes stuff is cool to read about.

This is probably the worst example of DLC I have ever seen. How do they justify charging for something as simple as video filters, when they were already available in the first game for free.
Crap, that run came out smooth. I guess its to expected after two hours though huh? I'm sure you guys will figure everything out from a business standpoint. I was in business for myself for a while and it definitely was a bit unnerving at first.
Just keep cranking out that content and we'll keep eatin' it up.
Nice run. Reminds me of the hour and a half I spent in Trials 2 trying to get just the perfect run. That time just flew by and the feeling of sweet success was amazing.
i say you get the filmer pack. the videos that are out there (mainly the guy you linked to) are amazing and the shots you guys would lay out would be amazing given the fact the 1up show and co-op are greatly filmed. though i do think $7.50 is too much for a couple of new cameras (i say only one is functional) and more storage space on the servers, but the results are amazing.
