CO-OP 0212 -- Devoted to Mode 7 -- Batman: Arkham Asylum, Gangstar, Metroid Prime Trilogy

There’s been a lot of Metroid in the gaming world lately. We all know how JayFresh was introduced to the Super Nintendo versions last week and now, it seems, the Super Nintendo has sunk its claws into him and won’t let go. More after the show:

I was always a ginormous fan of the Batman animated series. I watched it every day after high school and loved how it treated its audience (me) as worthy of the kind of intellectual and emotional exploration usually reserved for prime-time dramas. No, it wasn’t quite The Wire, but it certainly seemed to take the subject matter as seriously as anything ever had before and at the time I felt like I was actually experiencing commentary on the human condition in animated form. Of course, I was in high school; everything was commentary on the human condition. Still, when I found out Arkham Asylum was written by the same dude behind the animated series, I knew there was going to be a story there I could delight in. The game itself, though offers up far more game than we thought possible. Ryan, myself, and JayFresh have, admittedly, a bit of a love-fest over what really is the best Batman game to date and one of our favorite games so far this year.

The iPhone may very well be more powerful than developers realize. This game proves that not only can you bring a near-GTA experience to the iPhone, but that it can be done with controls that are fairly intuitive and with gameplay straight out of the early PS2-era. It was a surprise to both Jason and Cesar that such a game even existed, but, as they mention, it’s not without its flaws.

Perhaps it would have been more awesome to have a new Metroid Prime, but re-releasing the entire trilogy, complete with improved, Wii controls a la Corruption is nothing to sneeze at. Ryan and special guest Torrey Holbrook Walker (you may recognize that name from our music credits) step out into the depth of night in order to discuss the finer points of what makes this series so particularly special.

::Smiley Face:: @ Ryan's comments for acknowledging the potential that's possible with Retro getting let off their 'Metroid leash'. The trilogy's release really does showcase the feat that they managed to pull off to begin with. Now if someone could just shut up the purists that simply can't latch on to the Prime titles out of blind reverence for their predecessors. ^_^

I'm actually considering bumping the first Prime up as a priority for the future now (currently working on Chrono Trigger). I forgot how much I loved that the first Prime's music.

Great episode - much nostalgia for me as I remember getting my SNES when I was 8, and spending the subsequent years doing exactly what Jay did. I recently went back and went through Secret of Mana again, as well as the awesome Buster Busts Loose. Great stuff.
Anyway, another intriguing episode, chaps. I really am enjoying Arkham as well, it's surprised me at how good it turned out to be. Any reason this was? There was so much hype around it, and they were really pimping it a lot - why are we all shocked at the fact it's a decent game? (Also at this point, I'd like to add Batman and Robin on the SNES was amazing.)

Also, I liked the running joke of 'Kiss From A Rose' - gave me a chuckle at the end.

Any chance of RB: Beatles next week, then?

(@ the office) downloading the show right now. Heh, the episode's name reminded me of a radio show I used to do with a friend. We named it "Mode 7".

Another fun episode. Nice to see the Prime series get some love.

Prime is awesome and I think Fresh is taking the SNES thing a little too far....

PLEASE
Review: Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story when it comes out next week!!!!!!!
PLEASE

Great episode guys!
I enjoyed the Arkham Asylum feature, kuz' I've wanted to play that game for a long time now... the fact that there's so much replay value and gameplay options is enough for me to buy it, and I hope more games will be like this in the future (Then again, MGS4 also had a lot to do)
And the Gangstar section "opened" my eyes to how sophisticated ITouch/Phone games can be.

Been loving Batman since its release, the developers have really put so much love and care into this game. The voice acting is some of the best ever put into a game. The environments, variety of gameplay and boss encounters are all fantastic. It is going to take something special to stop this from being my game of the year. Watching your discussion makes me think I should have got the PS3 version, playing as the Joker looks great fun. I would not be surprised if the Joker became DLC for the 360.

Al

Just after I posted my comment I read this:

Eidos and Rocksteady Studios are priming Batman: Arkham Asylum for some free DLC next week.
"Free downloadable content coming in 9 days," confirms the news ticker below the in-game main menu of the Xbox 360 version (also PS3)

Is there anything you can do about the pop up ads in the video it's just when you hover over the video it brings up a number of options but they happen to be over the close button for the ads and it's bit annoying trying to watch the video with a big ad in the way

Great episode as always! Man, I miss my SNES games. I still have a few but I lost some of the great ones I had like SF2, and seeing that cart in the video really reminded me of that. The Batman game looks incredible, I played the demo, REALLY want to play the full thing when I get the chance to buy it! ARGH! :P

And the Metroid segment made me want to get the Trilogy so I can play Echoes - I got so lost on that when I was playing on the 'Cube, too much going back and forth and no tips as to where to go next really made me go nuts in that game.

@SnakeLinkSonic ... Prime's music was what initially sucked me into that game. The opening theme is still one of my favorites of all time.

@refmcfly ... I think it's just because it seemed like such a solid game but that it could very have easily devolved into just a bunch of gimmickry. The demo showed such a small portion of the game and I think some of us expected that to be the entire game experience. A pleasant surprise that it was not :)

@Sune ... yeah, Gangstar definitely shows how much the iPhone is capable of. I think, just like any other platform, people are going to learn the tricks of the trade to get more and more out of the system.

@Al ... yeah, I can't see the DLC not coming out for 360. I'm sure it was just a time-constraints issue. I'd be willing to bet that announcement, as you've surmised, is just that.

@Woody ... weird, I've never noticed that. Lemme take a look and then bitch to Revision3 ;)

@Eduardo ... Yup, the trilogy is the best excuse to get those games if you haven't played them yet.

OMG! That's so crazy that you are featuring SNES and talking about NES in your show. I just found a Exchange shop and bought a working NES and SNES. Even picked up some rare games, such as Final Fantasy (NES) in mint condition. Awesome show guys, as always! Gotta love the retro. It's too bad Nintendo forgot about its core players. NES and SNES will forever be the best console. I remember getting my first NES when I was 6 on Christmas, back in 1987. Sneaking out to my Mom's car to see it when everyone was asleep before Christmas was priceless. I still remember it vividly today! Anyway, rock on area5!!!!

Guys I hate to break your hearts, but I don't think we're ever going to see a 360 developed retro studios game considering they're a first party nintendo developer. Aw well, great show anyways!

FYI: the encoding still doesn't play on properly when streamed onto 360's.

@Eddie E. Givens, Jr. ... For my brother and I it was always trying to get over to our friends' houses that had a NES and playing them until our mom INSISTED we come home. Haha! We saved up our birthday and Christmas money for something like a year and finally bought one ourselves. I'll probably never know a game as well as I knew Super Mario Bros. :)

@Matt ... Yeah, I'm not surprised. Rev3 hasn't gotten back to me about that. I'll bug them again. Just to be clear, which files are you streaming?
