CO-OP 0304 -- 3D or not 3D -- Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, James Cameron's Avatar, Torchlight
The words “movie” and “license” area anathema to gamers when paired and the exception is rare. Fortunately, this week’s coverage of James Cameron’s Avatar may show us a way to one of said exceptions. We were invited to an event at the Dolby Labs in San Francisco to experience the game hands-on (in 3D no less). That begs the question: is 3D gaming a gimmick? Does anyone expect to actually own a “3D Ready” television soon enough to give a care as to whether Avatar is in 3D or not? We’re divided on the issue on this one, but that didn’t stop us from accepting an invitation to put on some goofy looking glasses and try it out for ourselves. More after the show:
Liberty City is an endless playground for ideas and implementation of said ideas and as long as Rock Star continues to deliver quality on the order of The Ballad of Gay Tony it’s likely we’ll keep buying each episode. Ryan, Cesar, and our friend from RebelFM and Eat. Sleep. Game., Tyler Barber get behind the wheel again for some insane, action-movie-esque times in the seedy underbelly of Liberty City’s club scene..
Diablo-likes abound. Excellent ones are few and Torchlight is the best of them yet. Granted, it lacks multiplayer but given the pedigree of the developers (many of which are the same people that brought you the first two Diablo games) it should be small wonder that Torchlight feels like an evolution of the gameplay type rather than an also-ran. Arthur Gies from the RebelFM podcast and Eat. Sleep. Game. came over to talk with Matt about why any Diablo fan not caught up exclusively on multiplayer should give this one a go.
We were invited (and accepted, of ourse) to go see Jame’s Cameron’s Avatar at the Dolby Labs here in San Francisco. 3D in the best audio environment imaginable? Yes please! We got to put the controllers in our hot little hands and give both the Human and Nav’vi characters a go. Check out our preview within!

Until next week......
Survey says!
Modern Warfare 2, iphone game, and new super mario bros wii
Is there a way we can skip past the opening theme song? It aboslutely blows and i was just wondering if you could do that. thanks. Also, cat people huh? Says alot about a bunch of guys living in San Francisco
I'm genuinely surprised... usually I expect game adaptations of movies to be either bad or decent, but from what I've seen in this episode, I'm really hyped for how the full game is going to turn out. James Cameron really is something ;)
Is there a way we can skip past dumbass commeters? They absolutely blow and i was just wondering if you could do that. thanks. oh wait - there is a way. I'M A DUMbASS.
The theme song is AWESOME, it runs through my head EVERY Wednesday. F@*K those nay-sayers, they can burn. Anyways, great episode as usual. If I wasn't so desperately poor I would donate. As soon as I fall into some cash I will share the wealth with the crew of my favorite show! Any chance on reviewing Dragon Age Origins? I really enjoyed your take on Demon Souls and would love to see what you guys think. Not to say they are similar. Every other reviewer on the net gave it some pretty high scores, and your review made me think twice. Thanks for the info.
CATS OVER DOGS?! matt i dont like you anymore.
... aww nah i still like you. but dogs over cats. always.
Bought Eps of liberty city last week, but have only put a couple of hours into it. Finishing Borderlands and starting Modern Warfare 2 has taken up most of my gaming time.
My next RPG is going to be Dragon Age, and with Mass Effect coming out at the start of next year, I think Torchlight will be another interesting game that will pass me by.
I can imagine some utilisation of 3D gaming in arcades and theme parks, but home use will be limited to the extremely wealthy for the foreseeable future, unless Nintendo release a Wii 3D : )
Regards
Al
Great Episode, although I really feel I was missing alot, because I coulden't see Avatar The Game in 3D, like you had guys, but it sounded interessting, although I gotta admit, it's not a game that is high on my list yet.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next, btw have you played machinarium? Independent Adventure game, really diggin the Visual art, and little touches the developers has made to the Character, the story is told only with visual tought bubbles, and animation, no word or text,I'm really enjoying playing it 8-)
Makes me happy to see the Adventure genre not completely dead

@some guy & @nart ... the cat thing was a joke--Arthur and I were just having fun with some flame bait ;) -- I love both cats and dogs equally. Though, to be fair, if I owned a pet I'd probably have a cat just because they're easier to take care of and I'm lazy.
@ricky ... Yeah, some people love it, some people hate it. Just the way it goes.
@Al ... yeah, it's that time of year. Some things just have to fall by the wayside, no way around it! I'm still neck deep in Dragon Age. I've got MW2 sitting here waiting for me and we should be getting Assassin's Creed 2 soon.
@KennethHoegh ... yeah, Ryan's been playing a lot of Machinarium and, just looking over his shoulder, it looks fantastic. Unfortunately we're just in that time of year where everything is coming to a head and we have no choice but to let some things slide. That doesn't mean we're NOT going to cover Machinarium, just that we might not get to it until December. But yeah, I recommend everyone check that game out.
How can we get in touch with Nick Vassallo about his supremely awesome music??
