CO-OP 0315 -- Reflections 2009: Part 2 -- Borderlands, Flower, Dragon Age, Street Fighter IV, and Many More

It’s the second part of our epic, 2009 year-in-review special! We assembled a crew of the finest CO-OP regulars to share what their favorite games of 2009 wound up to be. This isn’t a “Game of the Year” rank-a-thon, but rather a recollection of what made 2009 such a freakin’ awesome year for gamers! More after the show:

Since this is a part 2, obviously we’ve got the same, awesome crew of CO-OP friends on hand!
- From Bitmob, Dan Hsu.
- Tyler Barber of RebelFM fame and Eat-Sleep-Game.com as well as regular work for GameSpy.
- Kat Bailey, a frequent, favorite guest of ours and a freelancer at large.
- Long-time blogger Tiff Chow.
- Justin Haywald and David Ellis from 1UP.com.

This week we reminisce fondly about Borderlands, Flower, Street Fighter 4, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mad World, Demon’s Souls, Dragon Age, HALO: ODST, ‘Splosion Man, Spelunky, and more! We loved 2009. You loved 2009! Holy crap-face was it a good year to be a gamer!

what a great recap of 2009, i like these kind of specials because when you all originally talk about games they normally have just come out. i'm a college kid so unfortunately i can't always buy games on release day. the benefit of this kind of show is that i get to hear you all talk about games after i've had a chance to play a few more of them (ie. batman from last week, new mario bros this week). keep up the great work guys in 2010, i really hope you can continue to make this show for as long as you desire.

ps. you all should team up with conan! coco co-op would be epic haha just pay him those millions of dollars i'm sure you have laying around

Maybe, I'm crazy, but it seemed like you actually did *not* talk about Street Fighter 4, Dragon Age, and HALO: ODST, despite the description. Just sayin'.

Everytime I see Barber in a video I'm expecting someone to shout "Where is Tyler Barber at!"

Hehe great episode guys and girls again, I sometimes just play that last level of Flower just to cheer me up, on a bad day, the music, and all the colors makes me smile big time 8-)

Oh and Tiff Chow really makes great faces, when she talks about games for instance at 20:51 in the video.

But that's okay because you can see the excitement she gets by talking about the games 8-)

can't wait for the next episode guys, keep up the awesome work.

As 2009 draws to close, I wonder how the game industry is going to change this year in 2010. What systems will really step it up and bring an epic line up that just blows everything out of proportion? (PS3?)
Where is the gaming industry going to be like in the future? When I'm really old and I tell my son, "Hey youngster, Halo was my thing back in my day!" Would he just say that Halo would be a piece of crap compared to his Nintendo Life Simulator or something like that.
Who knows!
But what I do know is that this year, Area5 is going to be there, to tell me what's good and what smells like a donkey's ass.

I laughed so hard when Tyler looked straight at the camera and said "Captain forever".

Great recap, I always love to hear you guys discuss games. A lot of good games this year, and a lot of games you guys reminded me to try out some point soon. Looking forward, I can't wait for what the next year will bring, and more of this great show, Area 5.

Wow really didn't expect them to admit that they didn't give Demons Souls a real chance.

lawl i got baked and noticed.. "wheres jason at?!"/

I loved Dan Hsu's comment on how playing Splosion man is like having sex, haha. Great comparison.

Borderlands was the biggest surprise of the year, must have put about 50 hours into that game! As was said in the show great game to play while chatting to friends. The second dlc was a disappointment though, seemed a bit rushed and unfinished.

Anyone interested in Splosion man, its going to be 400 points next week in XBLs deal of week.

Regards
Al

Was really looking forward to a group recap of Dragon Age and even MW2 to an extent. Where exactly were they?

Noticed ryan's post on twitter about mass effect collectors edition armor and stuff. Maybe this will help? http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/tons-of-mass-effect-2-dlc-available-free-right-now/

@Wehoo ... Hahaha!

@Novato ... that is the dream, indeed ;)

@Neptune ... Tyler Barber am rad! That's just accepted fact these days

@Ryan Heffernan ... yeah, 2010 is shaping up to be even more crazy than 2009. At least its certainly starting off that way, and given how the holidays always ramp up, I'm not entirely sure I'm ready for it!

@cactus jack ... I always thought that was kinda the tone of our original Demon's Souls piece--that we didn't give it a chance because it frustrated the hell out of us so much early on. But, when Kat says something is good, it is, so it inspired more reflection and introspection!

@allen .. He was there... or WAS HE? Whoa, did I just, like, blow your mind, or what?

@Al ... 'lot of people would agree with you on Borderlands! I wouldn't exactly call it a sleeper hit, but certainly not one people expected to do quite as well as it did! NICE, I didn't know about that deal. I, shamefully, still haven't played 'Splosion man. That deal may get me to take the plunge!

@Fledz ... honestly if I could rework the title of the blog post without breaking the Digg link, I would, but unfortunately the link is tied to the URL which is tied to the title of the post :/

Hey Area 5 guys, can you please sell your original music to iTunes? It would be greatly appreciated and might bring in a hefty profit. My email is MFL11592@aol.com, so if you guys do in fact do this, please tell me!

pleaseeee more Rob. every scene he has been in since even back on the 1up show has been just classic and funny. more rob please

also pleeeaaseee never again david ellis

Re: David Ellis - did he hate on one of your favorites or something? Before you answer, be sure that's not your root criticism. He's actually one of the more centred and balanced commentators from the 1up cadre - unless you're into spoiled, extremist fanboyism I guess.

I loved the Mass Effect 2 add in this one! Also, isn't this the second sketch I've seen where Jay Fresh has to take a leak? Is there a running theme developing here? That aside, I enjoy what you guys do with advertisements and I find them all pretty entertaining.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the games of 2010.

Fun episode, particularly for the coverage of Splosion Man and Flower. I was disappointed that the SF4 and Dragon Age talk was cut out. I guess you guys filmed it but decided to hold it over for the third installment?

January 31, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJohn_W

I hope not - following the lametrailers example of putting out a 20 minute episode over 5 weeks is the fast track to IDGAF

January 31, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersdf

You forgot Machinarium!! I hope you played it :)

Looking at revision 3's site i believe you're to start doing the show live? I'm not sure why you would change to this set up as i dont think theres much demand for another on the spot or 1up's game night. When did editing become a bad thing, it just results in a more concise and better produced show that makes for better viewing.

February 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commentertouchmypenguinagain

I understand why you'd go "live", obviously the show in it's current (previous?) format would be ridiculously time intensive and possibly financially irresponsible. That doesn't stop me being disappointed by the news, though.

R.I.P Co-Op / The 1UP Show. Hope it comes back in some form some day.

February 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpedantics

Title was a total cock tease. I just lost 40 minutes of potential productivity to hear you guys talk about games I didn't care about. :(

February 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLiQuid!

The lack of attention/praise Trials HD gets is criminal. Best 360 game of 2009 hands down.

February 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim

What is this about going live? someone please explain....dont tell me they are closing down.
