CO-OP Live 0105 -- Just Cause 2, Tilt to Live, and iPad Launch Game Must-Haves

We could have done an entire show on iPad games given that this device has more on offering to gamers than some full-on console launches! Still, we figured that would leave too many people out in the cold and Just Cause 2 is just so deserving of accolades for the things that it does well that we had to show it off. First, though, we took the opportunity to answers some of your questions point-blank about what’s happening with Area 5 as a company—in case you missed it, read the last two blog posts for the latest news. More after the show:

Yes, we love Tilt to Live! It’s such a beautiful use of the iPhone hardware and has such a delightfully surprising sense of humor that there’s no way your iPhone should be without this game. Yes, it can be a little frustrating at first given that it takes some time to get enough achievements to unlock all the power-ups, but just stick with it. It’s meant to last only a few minutes each game. You’ll get better and you’ll be a better human for having played this game!

The usual quip about rocks and being under them would apply here, and since I my creative word-smithery has decided to abandon me at the moment I’m simply going to leave it at that when bringing up the iPad. Should you be fortunate enough to have one of these devices (I am not *shakes fist in anger at Cesar and Ryan*), there are some games that are absolutely worth the more-expensive-than-iphone-games price point and we cover all of these on this week’s show: Geometry Wars, Command and Conquer, Mirror’s Edge, Charadium, Nova HD isn’t the best FPS ever but it certainly shows that the iPad is this-genre-capable, and in a unique twist, the iPhone’s Eliss upscales perfectly on the iPhone. Steph Thirion, Eliss’s creator doesn’t even know why, but there’s one game that translates so perfectly from iPhone to iPad that if you’ve bought it once you’ll get a great experience unique to both platforms!

Hey I was looking up Charadium and they say its for iPhone and iPod Touch, but it's no longer on the app store. Did they switch it to iPad only? This makes me sad.

Thanks for the great episode, I didn't know Rob left, I'm going to miss him!!! What's he doing by the way? I'm sad co-op is going away, but am looking forward to your next project. Good luck.

Awesome show!
I hope the last episode will have a big montage of all the greatest scenes from your previous episodes so that any newer viewers can see what they have missed over the past year and a half.
Matt, I will say the ipad looks awesome but when you think about it, you don't need the 1st generation. You need the 3rd generation :) Here's hoping for a camera, video, and flash!

Viva La AREA5!

Great show guys, I'm definately going to miss seeing CO - OP Live, but I can't wait to see the content you guys make for EGM. I already got a subscription and am waiting eagerly for first issue and digital digest.

I have a question though, after seeing my question answered on this episode I was wondering if you were going to incorporate twitter questions into whatever you do for EGM. I know the letters section exists but it would be really cool to see some viewer question answered on the shows, even if they have to be sent in advance.

Anyone else think Matt looks so different with that shaved look? I mean, it took a while (partly because you guys haven't been on for a while, but also partly because I suck at noticing things) to realize that there was something different about the way he looked, and what exactly it was lol. Good luck with all your future endeavors!

while i'm glad you all have exciting things on the horizon, i was in need of another podcast to fill the void left by Co-op. so when i saw that Rev3 had a new videogame podcast, i decided to give it a shot. HOOBOY was that a mistake. oh god, did it make me that much sadder that you guys will be leaving the network. it also made me miss intelligent video game discussions, high production values, and great scripted content. damn you guys for conditioning me to expect Area5 levels of awesome when it comes to podcasts. it just makes the other crap out there that much more depressing to watch.

Hi, Just watched the latest eps and for me was the the most enjoyable of the live eps.

Just Cause 2 looks like a lot of fun. One thing this generation of consoles has delivered is some great open world games. Red Dead Redemption and Crackdown 2 are top of my list this year.

ipad looks great, but the price of entry is to high for me.

Regards
Al

Probably the only time I've had the slightest interest in the iPad. Dang you guys!

I hope Mirror's Edge comes to iPhone though, it looks great.

I'm going to miss the show alot but I'm sure you guys will turn up again. For the last episode you guys should bring back on Jonathan Mann! That would be awesome!

April 8, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMatt S

@Matt S ... man, if we could bring him back that would be amazing! I'll have to see if he's available and would want to do it :)

@Al ... The cost is too high for me, as well. But I'm sure I'll cave at some point :/

@Webnet ... That's tough to say. It's a lot more difficult in stuff that's pre-recorded and edited to incorporate things like Twitter. Not that it's IMPOSSIBLE, but we'd have to think about how to make it work.

@Novato ... haha! I think we can live without a montage. I always feel like those are a copout for a "final episode" of a series. Besides, I'm not quite willing to admit, yet, that it's over for-ev-er!

@Steven .. He's actually in Oklahoma (no, really!) living with his girlfriend and going to business school! I'm sure he'll be back out our way at some point and I hope we can have him back on for some cameos at least!

@matt chandronait
With all this Area 5 work and the EGM stuff do you guys ever get a chance to play games?

April 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMatt S

Looking forward to what you guys do next. I hope it's like the 1up show! :D

Thank god you are stopping this horrible excuse for a show. CO-OP was way better as bite-sized clips that were edited well. This live bullshit is just sad.

If I could have asked you a question, it would be how egmi will be distributed. I heard there might be problems for a ipod/ipad copies because of the format used for it. It sure would nice to have in digital format as my go to pc is my alienware Mx11 now and it would be great to have those episodes on my netbook while traveling.

@ Matt

If I made a co-op logo that read, CO
OP
Forever

Would you put it on the final episode of co-op?

JC2 is a sick game and I'm glad you guys gave it so much love on CO-OP and RFM. Hope to see some coverage of Splinter Cell Conviction in your last show.

April 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRyan H.

GameFan, I assume co-op Live was a way for them to put content out faster and cheaper. The old show took time to prepare and edit and they didn't have the funds to keep such a high quality show running.

April 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVefom

I see you guys are creating new content so you will get a new deal !
