CO-OP 0103 -- Dusting off the Wii -- Mad World, World of Goo, and Bit.Trip Beat

Strangely enough, every game on this week’s episode is either a Wii exclusive or, at the very least, Wii available. And yeah, I say “strangely” because it’s been quite a while since most of us have even touched our Wiis. Cesar even had to go on quite a trek to recover his. Little known fact: they tend to wander away on their own when neglected. It’s true!

We actually brought in some former 1UP cohorts for this one. Delightful David Ellis and Killer Kat Bailey talk with Ryan and Cesar about the mildly violent Mad World. And by mildly I mean bathing in buckets of blood, swearing, and tasteless jests about forced sodomy. Um, yeah. On the Wii.

Yes, I know World of Goo has been out for many moons, but we never had a chance to cover it at 1UP thanks to the latter half of the year crushing us under a weight of gaming awesome as per the usual. So, we’re bringing it up now in the event that you may have missed it as well. It’s just that good. Tiff Chow agrees. She, Ryan, and I settle over some delicious, gooey ice cream to celebrate the game’s finer points.

And, also in the might-have-overlooked category is the just released Bit.Trip Beat. No, that’s not a typo—the extra period belongs there. It must be seen to be believed as any description is inadequate to the experience. It’s pong, but for this generation with elements of rhythm gaming grafted on that pulls together the modern and the retro in an even keel of gaming awesome. We knew we had to at least give it a quick first look in this week’s show.

This week is GDC and it’s going to be insanely crazy-busy for us so apologies if we’re not as available to the Internets as we might otherwise be. On the plus side we’ll be getting a ton or three of footage for the next few weeks’s shows which will focus largely around the indie gaming scene (The IGF am awesome!) along with a few guests which may surprise you. Well, surprise might be a strong word. Anyway, you’ll like our guests!

The show just went up and Im in a meeting in 10 minutes but I had a quick question about the opening. Who Made it? Is it someone on your team or is it a remember of the Revision3 team? It's top notch! Love the transitions.

I also love the switch to HD you guys were able to do without charging the viewers. I've really been enjoying the show and because of you guys I actually find myself traveling to Revision3's site to see what else they have to offer. So keep doing what your doing because it's working. :D

Woo! Great episode, the Wii Basement scene turned out *stellar!*

Looks like I'm riding high on some pretty tasteful quotes for both of my CO-OP appearances. Last time it was "The pooping never gets old." Now I'm at "That pixel was a dick." Woo!

See you guys around GDC!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter.tiff

Aww... I was disappointed at the lack of a huge rolling boulder. :(

Anyway, great work on this week with getting the Wii some exposure! Keep it up! :)

I know you guys hate Microsoft, but any chance of putting up an RSS feed of the show so I can subscribe to it on my Zune? I used to love to watch the 1up show on my Zune but haven't watched a single episode of co-op because It's such a pain in the ass to download it and then transfer it to my zune library and then upload it to my Zune, and I don't like watching long videos like this on my laptop.

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNick

Found it. The link is on the Zune Marketplace, there's just no link that I can find on your site, so, disregard previous nerd rant.

Wow, you guys really make me look at games differently -- games that I thought I would never play. Mad World now looks like it's definitely worth a rent at the very least, and the WiiWare games that are discussed in this episode seem really cool. I like the fact that you are just talking about the games, not really pointing out major strengths or weaknesses, mostly aspects that may have amazed you or disappointed you.

Keep it up, guys!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLiKuidFox

Hah! Did Caesar swap a 360 HD-DVD drive for his Wii? Perfect.

Thanks for introducing me to bit trip beat. Would have never heard of it if you guys hadn't mentioned it.

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRye

Great Show once again!!
Bit.Trip Beat is awsome and anyone who likes this kind of games should try http://www.doomlaser.com/stdbits/ for the PC.

Greetings from Germany

Great episode! I've been watching this stuff on Itunes HD and MAN DOES IT LOOK GOOD! Also, it took an episode or two, but I'm really coming to like the opening to the show.

As for the show's content, I must say that the talk on MadWorld really made me want to pick up the title. I hope to do so sometime within the nest month or two, when I can scrounge up money and maybe the title depreciates in value a bit. Until then, I figure I'll stick with my "Rune Factory: Frontier"!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGDW

bugger Bit.Trip Beat is not up here on wii ware in Denmark yet.

World of Goo I have for my PC great game, totally agree with you guys, and girl 8-)

I really didn't want to write and be a beer snob. But something is compelling me to write (perhaps it's the Orval) Please put it in a glass!

As with last week's video, the "Large WMV" link points to the "Small Quicktime" file. Correct URL:

Pretty good episode. Thanks for covering World of Goo, because until now I just heard it was cool, but now I'll definitely check it out. I think the episode should have ended with Cesar being chased by a Chain Chomp.

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

It was awesome to see you guys didn't forget about the Wii! Thanks for showing it some love guys!!!!! Great show!!!!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternaruto180

Haha, gotta agree with Jeff, put that beer in a glass. Anyway, awesome episode. I just got World of Goo, and have been hooked. I hope you guys can keep covering these sorts of indie games that could otherwise be overlooked. Keep up the amazing work!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNicholas

Great work guys! I think you guys should continue with a little series where each Co-op ends with an Area 5 member performing an Indiana Jones scene. That was brilliant.

Also, Bit.Trip Beat looks awesome. I wish I didn't loan my Wii to my girlfriend...

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ Hunt

Good job fellas, episode is once again very good. Buuuuttttt.....

You kept the bad announcer guy. Don't like him so much, but at least this time you injected some humor into it with the comment to Rob about the terminal (BTW I like that movie). Maybe that is the key to not making the voice annoying, make it funny, and poke fun at its absurdity. You know it is bad, so maybe exploit its awfulness. Maybe next episode. Honestly it doesn't matter, I am just glad you guys are doing well.

The format you have is very unique amongst the gaming sites. I enjoy tuning in every week to see your discussions on the games. Sometimes I wish they were games I will actually play, more mainstream stuff. Last week's was great for that with both halo wars and RE5. But I understand the desire to point out some smaller gems, and in truth it does make your show different IMHO.

Enjoyed the raiders ending, though I wish it would have kept going. :-(

Keep it up you guys.

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTodd

Amazing episode guys! The Indy ending had me in stitches and anything including Tiff Chow is always easy on the eyes ;)

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFrancisco

Maybe it's just me and Fall 2007 Macbook Pro, but is there visual distortion (pixelation?) in the "night time" scenes during the Madworld segemt? I'm seeing this in the 720p-30fps-MP4 version. Anyone else getting/seeing this?

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterReluctant Hero

Totally dug getting to watch Matt and Tiff's initial reactions to Bit.Trip Beat, interesting way to do that. Great episode chiiiiiiiiiiiiiilren!

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChurchy

Reluctant Hero: I was actually just coming to mention that exact thing in my comment.

I'm watching the 30fps HD version on my 40" 1080p LCD and in the nighttime scenes, some of the time everybody was dealing with a lot of pixel blocking and distortion and then the rest of the time (mainly towards the end by the time I noticed) they looked crisp and fine. I assume this was two different cameras filming, one of them not HD? Just a small issue in an otherwise good segment.

Beyond that, while I think last week's ep was much more "laugh (or maybe groan) out loud" funny, this week, with Cesar vs. the house clutter (and I definitely sympathize with him on that one) was well done, though the ending had a bit less payoff - the HD DVD drive swap was a nice choice though.

Also, much love for Word of Goo! I've been a ruthless evangelizer about that title - even though, as you said, it's an older game, it's nice to see it get some well deserved screen time.

Also, is there ever going to be an option for readers to be able to register? We know you guys drinking the Squarespace Kool-aid right now, but some of us miss Wordpress ;P

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRob Thomas

Hey there! Old time 1up Show fan here, I'm glad to see that you guys are still in the game. Just discovered Co-Op last week. Keep up the great work.

Also I like the harmonizing going on in the intro it really compliments the visuals.

March 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHossam

Wow. You did one on Madworld :) I was hoping you would to see what all your thoughts are on that amazing game! That was another great episode. Oh, once a week. I wish they all could be a bit longer. I can't get enough of your show! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to next tuesday! :)

March 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterXcite79

Awesome episode. Actually inspired me to buy World of Goo on Wii (which I did, then realized my Wii's GPU is frying even though I've used it a total of maybe 20 hours.. little broken pixels all over the screen).

Maybe you can set something up for fans of your show to let game companies know that we purchased their games because of your coverage of it.

Keep it up. Good luck at GDC.

March 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBiggs

Wow what can i say that you have not heard already, thanks for the show ! the swicth for the hd drive was great .

March 25, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermosqito

I didn't expect to hear "that pixel is a dick... give it to meee" in a CO-OP episode. Freudian slip? Or is that what they mean by hardcore gamer? Keep it up! Oops...

March 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterArgentR

was ryan drunk toward the end of the eps.? his face was really red

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJCrazYAkumA

Have to agree with about the whole 'bad announcer' voice thing. Honestly, it makes me want to turn off the show.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's Matt for anybody who's wondering.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWormdundee

Great show loved every munute of it. Downloaded Bit.Trip Beat right after and I love it as well. Never would have given it a chance if you guys didnt show it off

Good show guys. Glad to see 3 games being covered. Keep it up! Remember, 3 is the perfect number.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEric

awesome podcast, as usual. I love the way you talk about games, like how someone would with their friends, very casual. the way it should be!

World of Goo is thumbsup, also. told a few of my music inclined friends to check out bit.trip, which I'd never heard of. thx for the update.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrent

Another awesome episode. I saw you guys at the powell station today, but was thought it was too awkward to say anything.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Wow, the co-op show keeps getting better and better!
The nice chilled hardcore-gamers-speaking-casually set up is still intact, but it's just overall fantastic, and even better than 1up show, which was already awesome by definition.
You always have valid points when critize games, but are overall enthuastic gamers.
The bottom line, i love your show. I'm happy as hell that the big UGO 1up takeover wasn't the end of this splendid concept.

From the chilly realms of Denmark, i salute you :)

ps. Tiff Chow is -THE- gamerchick!

March 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWilliam

The Indiana Jones bit was great! I actually liked it much better than the stupid goofiness of last week, but I am that kind of guy. In fact, this was one of my favorite CO-OP episodes that I've seen so far. You guys are awesome!

March 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRyan D.

All these years watching The 1 Up Show and I've never left a comment. I was really pissed to see how 1 Up Show was dismantled it's a show I always looked forward to watching the gaming information was unmatched by any other news gaming site in my opinion. You guys talk about games the way real gamers talk about games. Your attention to detail is meticulous. I have to say I did a little dance when I heard you guys were back in business, I couldn't be happier. Best of luck to all you guys. THIS IS THE BEST GAMING NEWS VIDEO SHOW HANDS DOWN. Thank you.

March 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermike

What about The house of the Dead Overkill? That too is a great fun and mature Wii game! And I love the music!
You are a bit too harsh with the Wii, overseeing things as HotD or Deadly Creatures.

March 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFlorian

Another long time 1UP Show viewer glad to see that you guys are doing well and still creating quality content. That Indiana Jones skit was great! It's too bad everyone can't swap their HD-DVD drive for a Wii... Nice to see some coverage of World of Goo, I played the demo on Steam a while back and was just blown away by the creativity and polish. I bought it but still need to finish it. I'm also impressed with the 720p content, it looks great for file size. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to your GDC coverage!

March 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTim

Great show. Get Matt to keep doing the cheesy voice announcer guy thing. Some people just don't get irony...

March 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGary, U.K.

Simple, elegant, and entertaining. You produce some fine works on this here internet.

Thank you.

March 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGavin, UnderBox

Best looking show yet guys! Good one. Being a bunch of mac geeks, I'm sure you've seen the iPhone 3.0 90min video that was release about two weeks ago. I bring it up because there is now support for subscription models of payment for apps. I think that a CO-OP (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) i-zine, with some value added material, or articles(maybe some from the giant crew of freelancers you know, a good way to get them some cash) might be easy to put together and be a cash cow. anyways, keep up the amazing work. AO.

id love tiff chow to play with my goo.

March 31, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterted

Good episode! Although I think the background where you filmed the MadWorld discussion is a bit dull. I know you've used it before, but it's something about clear dark skylines that are just not very satisfying to the eye. The café shots were good, though, and the couch stuff were ok I guess =) Please find some new locations!
