Area 5, GDC, and Your Mom

Well, actually, your mom doesn't have anything to do with this. I just needed a third noun to insert into the title and my post-GDC-addled brain refuses to resort to creativity.

We're used to having to work for sites that insist on being sites of record; meaning that they're insatiably fixated on covering anything and everything possible at an event like GDC. Being independent means that we can narrow our focus and direct it at what we actually think will be of interest to us our audience. It also means we had to re-acquaint ourselves with all of our industry contacts, attempt to form new ones, and reassure them that the rumors of our deaths had been greatly exaggerated. For the most part this was a success. Congratulations did abound and our deal with Revision3 was received by many as a sign of very positive things to come for CO-OP. Other people had no idea who Revision3 is. Makes sense. We're their first show focused exclusively on gaming. Hopefully we can help put them on the map. Being everywhere at once and pimpin' yer new shit is exhausting, though.

We also discovered that virtually no one understood that our business model is a video production company of which CO-OP is intended as but one of the projects we are capable of. Marketing, messaging, promotion, all things that never really mattered to me much as a single-product-focused individual have suddenly come to fore. I used to receive so many press releases in my inbox at 1UP that I considered developing filters which would simply delete anything containing "to the next level," or "pushes (or pushing) the envelope," or, really, anything containing the words "gripping" or "launches." Do not pass-through Spam Folder, do not collect $200. Now I realize we need to be sending out press releases. At least I know what to avoid.

AREA 5 MEDIA LAUNCHES VIDOE PRODUCTION SERVICE WITH A GRIPPING EDITING STYLE THAT WILL TAKE YOUR VIDEOS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

See? Easy! (note the inclusion of typo for authenticity)

The best thing about GDC is the indie scene. It really is the E3 for indie developers and it's what we tend to focus on most when going to the show. We'll be devoting an entire episode to that, soon, but given that we have less than two days to put together an entire episode of CO-OP, it will be mostly consisting of our GDC roundtable which included Adam Sessler, Jeff Cannata, John Davison, Patrick Klepek, and others. Speaking of which, I better get started!

Also, Squarespace loves us :)

So could we be getting two GDC episodes; one for the indie games and the other is a roundtable of you guys discussion the cool things you say at GDC.

Please tell me this is so...

I can't wait to get the Sess on CoOp.

I'm still waiting for T Shirts to buy.

If you guys did a T-shirt i would be rocking it all around Chico State. Make sure to make 3XL if you do =)

Looking forward to your GDC roundup. Also, merch! You guys have an international following, so anything that'll ship overseas is pretty much a must. Maybe invite people to submit shirt designs if you guys are busy with show stuff.

Also, I think Spoiler Vampire needs a few compatriots. Maybe Cynical Zombie or Newbie Warewolf. I dunno. You're the creative types :)

Aw. I thought I was going to walk downstairs and hear how much fun my mom had at GDC in her interview with you guys.

Oh yeah, and thanks for the posting between episodes. A week is too long to wait for an update. (And also, if you're laughing at me because I live with my mom, just know that I'm 16).

What is this Vidoe Production I hear of? Sounds very gripping and next-level-esque.

Joking aside, can't wait to watch the next episode of Co-op. Mad ranting Adama Sessler for the win?

Nice to know that you'll still bring the GDC experience to us common folk. I'm looking forward to see what indie games you'll cover.

I'm just glad you guys are back!

Yeah, sorry about the infrequent posts. It's been crazy trying to make the show happen along with GDC coming up...then GDC...now post GDC. Conventions are always a huge drain on our team as we have to do the whole covering-the-show thing as well as the meet-new-people thing which means we don't even get to start editing until the show is either over or nearly over.

And yeah, merchandise would rock! We're searching for some good merchandise partners so that we can make that happen. High quality is a must. We'd rather sell fewer shirts that cost a little more to produce than sell a bunch of iron on shit ;)

Speaking of GDC and Indie games. I think you guys should cover more freeware/shareware games. Like Cave Story and Jumpman.

It would help the "poor" people like me. The ones that still don't have any current-gen systems unless you want to count the DS. Even that is the original DS.

Hey guys, just finished watching the first GDC podcast and it really got me excited for upcoming titles like Infamous and Fat Princess.

One thing that irked me slightly is how much attention the 3D hardware is receiving in games media. Wasn't this gimmick a flop back in the day? I'm also not sure I like how putting on those glasses and a nice headset allows one to retreat into their own little world and subsequently become even more socially retarded. I agree that it's amazing technology, but I for one won't buy it because I don't *need* it to enjoy the games I have.

When I noticed you had some coverage of the newest Zelda title, I was anticipating someone to say "What the hell, Nintendo? Is the next one going to be The Legend of Zelda: Propeller Plane Excitement?". They seem to be stapling the LoZ name onto the most ridiculous themes, which I think might hurt them when the general public realize what they're being sold.

All in all, a fantastic podcast once again. Love the musical choices and the skill in editing. This one in particular made me jealous since I can't afford to attend conferences in the US (or anywhere for that matter). Keep up the great work!

A really good episode. It was nice to see Adam Sessler in a format better suited to his talent rather than on xplay where he has to act like a clown and tarnish his reputation.

You should have him on more often just to boost his credibility with serious gamers.

SO wheres the episodes

@JD

The main page hasn't been updated with the new eps yet.

At present only one GDC ep (Season 1 Ep 4) is available, and it is currently viewable/downloadable here.

Hope that helps :)

Loved the GDC show, this episode was great. With all the coverage that comes out of the annual events, my favorite is always the round table with the 1Up Show, and now Co-Op. This year's GDC seemed pretty stuffed with a lot of big announcements; much more like a preamble to E3 than usual. Also, thanks for reminding me of World Of Goo. I tried the demo today and that's going to be a buy for sure.
