CO-OP 0108 -- No Climate Control -- Final Fantasy XIII Demo, Rhythm Heaven, Battlefield Heroes Beta, Flight Control
matt chandronaitRyan imported Final Fantasy: Advent Children from Japan since it comes with a demo for Final Fantasy XIII. Or, rather, it would probably be more accurate to say that the demo of Final Fantasy XIII comes with Final Fantasy: Advent Children. Either way, Ryan, Cesar, and JayFresh were the only ones who are really obsessed enough with it to bear the heat of the unusually hot weather we experienced during the filming of this week's episode. Special thanks to Chris Kohler of Wired.com's Game|Life for his willingness to hang out in our downstairs hallway for the Rhythm Heaven discussion. We have no climate control and it's the only place in the building where heatstroke didn't threaten our very lives! More after the show:
You'll no doubt notice that we're continuing with our iPhone gaming quick-looks. It's working pretty well, we think, shooting off-screen. So far you all haven't complained about the slightly shakey-cam nature of the footage and given that we love gaming on the device and there are a gazillion small, brilliant games out there, it's nice to know this slightly-less-than-ideal workaround has merit. One of Jason's favorites, Flight Control is the pick for this week.
JayFresh and I are definitely down with the free-to-play model for Battlefield Heroes. It's hard NOT to like the idea of having a top-tier, multiplayer experience for free! Still, I worry about it's viability. Personally, I'm seriously doubtful I would ever buy items with real cash-monies that deteriorate over a period, but at the same time I know that people do. Hopefully enough of them do to make Heroes a lasting endeavor for EA and I can keep playing. Yes, I'm a leacher. I'm also poor.
A couple of people have asked me (via twitter, mostly) what the best way is, in terms of our sponsors, to watch the show. iTunes and directly downloading the file are the two best ways. Watching it on YouTube is good, too, but the numbers there are a little more shakey for the Revision3 ad sales team to really pull together when selling the show to interested advertisers. Still, subscribing to the YouTube channel and getting the show that way does help! Finally, actually using the promo codes gives us a direct "bounty." For every code actually used, a pittance of it comes straight to us. It doesn't even have to be timed to the show's release. Quality episode, as usual.
Battlefield Heroes looks very interesting. Sounds like I would have to devote a fair bit of time to it though.
And I can't seem to find any trace of Rhythm Heaven down here in NZ, kinda makes me wanna import some more =D
Only suggestion would be a variety of locations..
Maybe you've been spoiling us with some of the recent episodes,
but this episode just seemed all done in the same spot ..

Hey Matt, what was the stick you were using for Battlefield Heroes?
I've been looking for a decent flight stick and you guys never actually said what brand or model the one you were using was.
Another great episode. I don't mind the story segments and haven't found them distracting from the game discussions. I liked how they blended into each other this week.
Flight Control looked pretty interesting. It reminded me of a DS game from last year called Air Traffic Chaos.
The FFXIII demo looked really impressive, but the gameplay didn't look like a great departure from previous entries in this series. No surprise there, I guess. But then again, if I wanted to play a western-style RPG, I would play Fallout 3 or Mass Effect. If I want turn-based random battles, I can't go wrong with Final Fantasy.
If you're looking to go back and cover a smaller game that you may have missed in the pile of other "backlog" games, I would love to see a discussion of Moon for DS. As you probably know, it was developed by the same team that made Dementium: The Ward. The tech on this game is very impressive (consistent 60 fps) and it is a big step up from Dementium.
I'm hoping to hold off on watching this episode until my copy of FFVII:ACC comes. If it comes.

for those wanting to play battlefield heroes be prepared for the fucking time of your life. this game is broke. for an experience designed for a more casual audience good luck trying to get the installer to download

Actually, if you want a western RPG you can't go wrong with "Demons' Souls" (ironically, a japanese game). I hope we get to see some coverage of that one on Area 5.
I've heard great things about Demons Souls too, it would be cool to see it covered.

Hey! I'm a little curious about something in the FFXIII demo that wasn't discussed in the episode. In the little clips we heard of the music, it sounded great. I was just curious as to what it sounded like throughout the demo and if it's a high quality soundtrack. Let me know what you guys thought.

so i held off watching this until my copy of FF7 ACC came in, but you didn't really spoil anything in the coverage... not that there was a whole lot to spoil.
such a weird demo though, i enjoyed the combat. and, i'm sure the story would be neat if i understood any of it. the thing that bothered me was it's incredibly straight forward (pun intended). and it's been stripped of all the stuff you expect in FF games... there's no loot , no way to look at your stats and equipment. no save points. it's just so weird to play a demo that does so little to convey what the full game will be like...
