CO-OP 0109 -- Another Day at the Office -- Fat Princess, Red Faction: Guerilla Demo, Phantasy Star Portable

You'll notice that the Digg link goes to a title different than this week's show. That was my fault. Every week I send show notes over to Revision3 with the title of show and its description and this week I forgot to change the title. I'm lame. Anyway, don't let that link fool you, it is, indeed, for this week's show! More after the show:

The Fat Princess beta is certainly not the kind of exclusive club you get thrown out of for wearing the wrong kind of khakis, but it's one of those times where you can't help but take stock and be grateful for life's little kindnesses. Even though the demo is only one level, David Ellis, Cesar and I all agree on the game's inherent charm and potential. I'm very eager to learn what changes the final game will bring, but it definitely seemed appropriate to us to bring this game to your attention again as it seems thus far to be a necessary addition to your short-list of game purchases should you be lucky enough to own a PS3.

A welcome surprise--to me, at any rate--is the demo for Red Faction: Guerilla. The demo for a game all too often harms the perception of the unfinished product. I knew several people that never gave RE5 a chance simply because of how crappy their experience was with that demo. Luckily for them (and us), the RFG demo is a little slice of demo-done-right heaven. For a game I wasn't paying attention to at all, I'm now thoroughly engrossed in the details of it's release. All praise Cthulhu that I won't have to wait long. Also, I figure I should throw out an "All praise" to JayFresh for pointing the demo out to me in the first place! We experimented with a live phone conversation between he and Rob discussion the merits of the demo in this week's episode. We actually had one camera on each end of the conversation (we only have one boom mic which is why Fresh's audio ain't the best). I think the experiment was largely successful, but we know now that we really need the person on the other end of the line to be more engaged.

Yes, it's pretty clear that I'm schilling for our sponsor, GameFly, in regards to Phantasy Star Portable, but I'm dead serious that I likely would never have played this game had I not been able to GameFly it. I'm poor and I can't buy every game that I might play the way I used to. Both Ryan and JayFresh encouraged me to give this game a go and I'm glad they did. It's an experience I never got the have back in the original's Dreamcast days and now I feel less like I missed out. In the last segment of this week's show, JayFresh and I share our thoughts while sitting in a tree (yes, that's a set-up).

Ever get the feeling that you're stuck in a situation in which the power to do what you really want is beyond your control. Mostly, for those of you familiar with office/cube life, this means the constant desire to be outside on a beautiful day. Recently, we realized there's no one to tell us we can't do exactly that.

Gotta say, Phantasy Star Online is probably one of my favorite games ever. If it wasn't for that game, I wouldn't be who I am today. I learned a lot from that game. It taught me friendship, it taught me co-op, it taught me happiness, it taught me complex storytelling (really, it's pretty deep!), and it taught me that big fucking swords are sweet.

Phantasy Star Universe, however, did not. But I hear that Portable is pretty good, and from the looks of it, it seems like fun.

Pedofile behaviour/ indications and sexual harrasment.
The reasons why i HATE most japanese games.
Those developers must be a bunch of perverts.

Big message to all Japanese game developers.
GROW UP or go see a doctor because that type of behaviour sick.

I still have three papers to write and two weeks left of school. Please Co-Op, I'm paying $20,000 per year, why do you insist on ruining my future every Tuesday by putting out this damned show and sapping my precious time? My compulsion to download your digital delicacies is often too great; for the sake of one young man's future and that of countless others, you must stop...please.

Hi, Big fan from Spain here!
Sorry if this is asked a million times (maybe), but... What song is the one in the intro? I hear it in all your episodes. I love it.

May 5, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterivanux

The song I asked in the last comment is not the CO-OP intro song... is the one playing in 01:25 in this episode (for example).

Another great little narrative running through the show - please don't lose sight of these. I loved them in 1up, and they just give a little fun to the show.
Once again you make San Francisco look awesome. Edinburgh in Scotland is rainy, and makes me envious.
Fat Princess look was great - one I've been interested in for a while, and I totally agreed with everything you said about RF: G.

Another great show guys. I've stopped going to 1up looking for videos / shows now - your quality is far better.
Quick question - will you guys look at Steam titles (eg. Plants and Zombies) in future shows?

Cheers.

Great Show Guys, really liked the Fat Princess Beta Talk, can already see there are things I diden't know from playing it.

But that Red Faction Segment, was a pretty big letdown for me, Fresh has played the demo, and Rob has not, so I diden't get the usual talk where diffrent people comes with their opinion of the game, so I'm sad to say I found that part a bit boring 8-(

Otherwise great show, and nice to see what it's like Outside where you live 8-)

Not so much a comment on the episode, but a general comment. You guys are really good for the gameing Industry. I never considered ever wasting money on a Nindtendo DS/i yet seeing your deep reviews on some of the games have persuaded me to buy. I included your URL on the comments box when I registered it at the Nintendo club. I hope you get some support from the companies you support through your passionate and cool reviews. Keep up the good work, you guys are better than edge and games tm ;) I read those.. but your show is funnier and deeper.

Please review more DSi games and show us more indie stuff.

Cheers

Another great show guys, really liked the Phantasy Star Portable segment, I plan to check that out now. I didn't so much dig the way you did the Red Faction Guerilla preview though, the one-sided thing didn't really work for me.

Keep on keeping on.

This show was really great as always. It's funny that you felt so excited about the red faction demo. I'm pretty sure the guys at RebelFM said that the demo made them not want to play the game and that it didn't do a good job of showcasing the open objective idea advertised by the game.

I wish the PS3 wasn't such an expensive monster. I definitely can't afford to get one, but I really want to play Fat Princess, Flower, Little Big Planet, etc. When it first came out I never would have bought it but the last year has been very kind to the PS3.

Also congratulations, it seems you've already got more diggs than last week's show. Keep up the great work. CO-OP is the best gaming podcast out there.

Another fantastic show! I wasn't feeling the phone conversation. Don't get me wrong, people talk about games over the phone all the time, but your unique presentation of a social discussion is better served with more than one person in the room. Maybe try filming an exchange between people talking over a webcam like Skype or even using the Voice chat on Xbox Live while someone is actually playing the demo or game.

May 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKamp

I agree with Kamp that the phone conversation bit wasn't very good. Nice try, maybe finesse the idea a little bit. But I think the show is much better when people are talking directly to each other.

And I also agree with regmcfly, please please please do plants vs zombies. And why didn't you guys covering the left 4 dead DC? I know Ryan at least played that one, the valve-whore that he is (no offense Ryan, I myself am a bit of a tramp for all things Valve, they make amazing stuff).

Show's awesome. Keep it up.

Thanks so much

I really love the show. I wish i could donate a few bucks a month.

Great episode except for the phone part like everyone else is saying. It seems forced and very unnatural, otherwise I really enjoyed the whole thing.

Good episode guys. I loved the Fat Princess stuff but even more than that I thought Red Faction looked interesting. Downloaded the demo yesterday and have been having a great time with it. This game might end up being very good and should sell quite a bit - if they can may the end of May launch date. The destructibility element is very very good and the choice of weapons and vehicles looks to be stunning. I suggest you chaps on here give it a bash and see what you think.
Peace out.

I love your show!
This time, the Fat Princess montage was pretty good, and talked about way more stuffs than most sites I read lately.

Keep it up guys, you're awesome and hilarious!

Cheers

I love the show, but I want to punch someone in the face everytime I hear that damn intro.

May 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergayfairy

Excellent episode. I agree with the others who found the phone conversation a bit stilted. I really liked the piece on Fat Princess. I'm really looking forward to trying that game. I worry that it might be difficult to play with strangers and impossible to play effectively without headsets. I guess we'll see.

Keep up the good work!

May 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterseanerino

Yeah, the phone coversation was definitely wierd, when the other person can't see nor play the game. But I'm guessing it was a scheduling issue...

May 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCoheno

@Matt: I'm a longtime viewer, and I just thought I drop a line and say thanks for putting out the show. It's great and it really gives me something to look forward to during the week. I wrote a post on my own gaming Web site blog in support of the amazing job you guys do every week, so please, check it out. Even though we're a tiny operation on the East Coast, I hope it helps bring in more viewers.
