CO-OP 0112 -- Punch-Out!!, E3 Predictions, Patapon 2 -- Alcohol Endurance Training

We all know that E3 is the most anticipated event of the year for the world of video games, and those of us at AREA 5 are going to do everything we can to bring you with us! Next week CO-OP will have three recorded/edited shows and three LIVE shows! Check out the full schedule for both us and the Totally Rad Show guys at http://revision3.com/e3. More after the show:

We take a bit of a breather at The Napper Tandy again (the local, Irish beer-me-and-food-me), this week, and talk with G4’s Patrick Klepek about what we’re most excited to see at E3 next week. The big three, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are on everybody’s lips and we’re all planning to Sam Fisher our way into their events, but for us it’s all about the games we already know will have a showing. Follow our predictions and then share with us what you’re most excited about!

Patrick was also kid enough to hang around after our E3 chat and talk with me about the enigmatically difficult Patapon 2. We both agree that it may be too much for the typical adult life to handle, but there’s still real genius there. Honestly, after the Patapon piece was done I felt I’d been a bit overly-harsh, but then I thought back on it and disagreed with myself. No, indeed, that game needs some adjustment before it’s going to rope me in. I think were I a teenager and with nothing else to occupy my time I could really get into it… it makes me wonder a lot about growing up/old and holding on to this medium for all I’ve got. Andrew Fitch’s post over at BitMob touches on such feelings as well. His post mentions that Dan “Shoe” Hsu calls it “old-man hands,” I call it Father Time.

It’s not every day you get to have a conversation with 1UP’s David Ellis and Scott Sharkey on our balcony. They do us a solid and come by to share the love over Nintendo’s latest nostalgic rehash: PUNCH OUT!!. Will there ever come a time when our childhood gaming memories will be insufficient cause to make us open our wallets? May that day never come.

Hungh...

I'll be interested in seeing what you guys address during Patty-2. The aging comment is what caught my eye there though. I'd rather go off to write about that...so I will.

Nice stuff, on the live-E3 coverage as well, I look forward to it.

Awesome show, always good to see Klepek chat with you guys.

Looking forward to your E3 coverage and I hope you feature the smaller games as well as the blockbusters.

Oops, it was actually Andrew Fitch over at BitMob that made the post, but the quote came from Shoe. I amended the original post.

@NeutralGrey ... That's actually tougher than you might think. We book ourselves solid with appointments featuring the blockbusters and have very little time to crawl around and look for the more interesting stuff on the side. We will, of course, look, but the ammount of coverage we get on those items is likely going to pale in comparison to, say, the IGF at GDC. It's a shame, really. We could use one more day of no appointments and no games coverage set ahead of time just to explore and find the smaller gems out there that you KNOW exist but that are continually hidden behind the glitz of the mega-publishers.

Good show! The Punch Out!! review in particular was good to see. I'd initially written it off as something not really worth playing - I was a Sega kid, so I've got no nostalgia for the franchise - but the review really made me think twice. I still doubt it'll have enough content to hold my attention long enough to justify a $60 CDN pricetag, but now I'm willing to give it a shot when it drops to the inevitable $30/$20 price point.

Interested to see what kind of coverage you guys cook up for E3! Personally, I'm hoping for as much Tim Schafer as time permits.

I love the show guys. This episode particularly was good and now I have this insatiable need to run out and buy punch out.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDario

the shows keep getting better each week, I can now admit that i addicted. keep up the good work.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterskadave

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterskadave

Awesome guys!!,downloading...

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFrancisco

thanks again for another great episode. i was really uncertain about whether or not i would like punch out!! on wii and you guys have convinced that i will. i can't wait to get your impressions on E3. have a blast!

p.s. thanks for continuing to do this even after what happened to 1up. it shows you guys really care a lot about what you do. don't think it goes unappreciated!

Scott Sharkey! Great to see him on Co-Op.

E3 is going to be a tornado of geek love and anger wrapped in utter exhaustion and possible despair. But if there's one crew that can handle it, it's you guys. You're the Little Mac of gaming websites, small in stature (for now), but filled with heart. Good luck, guys.

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ DV

Entertaining as always guys, I loved every second of it!

Now that I've FINALLY gotten a ps3, I can now experience next-gen games for myself! Lookin' forward to Bioshock 2, Project Trico, and some more details regarding the upcoming Metal Gear game...

So who at Co-Op is going to the E3? All of you?

May 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSune

Hot shiz as usual. though I would say that a couple of the locations you guys filmed out were a bit noisy, nothing deal breaking, but wouldnt mind not hearing all that background noise of dudes playing pool or whatever. Can't wait for all the stuff you guys are doing next week.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChurchy

Can you post what music you used in this weeks episode. CO-OP & Old 1UP FOREVER!

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRecluse

I dont like the flying dog-like thing in the new ico game.
Heavy Rain is the only gameboner i've had in a loooooong time, even if there isnt much more to it than quicktime events. Hopefully the story leans a bit towards Se7en and doesnt take the supernatural road to imagination land. And footage also hints that there are a whole lot different ways to finish the game. Replay assured. I CANNOT WAIT.

Kelpek's enthusiasm kinda makes him dominate the conversation at times, and sometimes it seems like you guys get just a tiny bit put off, but I think he delivers his ideas well enough that everyone seems to not mind that so much. But hey, I don't know the guy, it's just the vibe I get. Great show once again, REALLY looking forward to the coming week. So say we all!

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterOson

The show is awesome once again guy, and really does keep getting better and better for each week!

Love the Brütal Legend ad with Rob! His acting skillz are improving!

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCoheno

Hey guys, great show. Thank you for improving the Youtube video's quality. Just thought I'd post here to say thanks too.

I got a question about the E3 coverage and the live shows: will they be recorded for later view? I'm asking since we will all be innundated by content at the show, and I may miss some of the shows or part of them during E3.

Keep up at the awesome work, see you all at E3 (virtually, at least!).

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEduardo

Great again guys. The bookending of the games around the E3 rumour mill was excellent, and I really liked the full-on round table aspect of it (I think the first time you've done that since the start of CO-OP?), it's definitely something I'd like to see more of.

I liked how brutally honest the Patapon review was, there was almost an element of 'we're too old for this' to it, which is definitely a valid consideration (at 24, I don't really have the time to spend in a game like that...)
Anyway, good stuff, the off-the-wall intro was also quite frankly genius. I look forward to seeing how the finger saga develops.

Looking forward to the E3 coverage - After the internet Heavy Rain blow-out, it's rocketed its way up my list of 'to see' games, so good to see there's enthusiasm with you guys as well.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterregmcfly

Of course Heavy Rain is huge on my ist, too... as you probably gathered from the show this week ;p

@Eduardo ... yeah, the shows will be recorded and put up on Revision3 to watch later. We will, actually, have three "normal," recorded episodes of CO-OP during E3 that will go out through the iTunes feed and stuff. The Live shows will be live and then processed and put up at a later date.

@regmcfly ... That's pretty much the gist of it, I think. Were Patrick and I in middle school or high school, I think we could've gotten into the game. As it is, adult life is just too complicated for that kind of game... especially since I already play WoW (though hardly at in these past few months)

@Oson ... No way, man. Patrick is great! It's just when you have people passionate about a subject they tend to run over one another in conversation. We'd rather let our guests have our say so we tend to let them talk as much as possible :)

“PREDICITONS”?

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCoffeemate

The music during the patapon2 segment was nice. Who was the artist so i can snatch it on iTunes.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhenbach

Fantastic show (as always). Thanks for showing some of the Uncharted in game footage, it gave me the tingles. I subscribe through iTunes to the show (thought you might want to know) and have checked out your sponsors as well.
But I wanted to ask Matt Chandronait a question:
Who makes your glasses and where did you get them?

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWetz

I thought that alcohol endurance training was a joke!

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ

Awesome show, guys, as always. Loved the E3 round table discussion. Your enthusiasm for games is infectious. Well done! Anyway, being an adventure game lover of yore (think King's Quest) I am quite eager to see further news, screenshots, videos, what-have-you on Heavy Rain. I hope you will or have already scheduled some time for it in one of your E3 shows next week.

May 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Snider

@Brian Snider ... we've definitely got some good stuff going around Heavy Rain. Honestly, I don't know what kind of footage/opportunities we'll have, but I'm an adventure game junkie, too, and we all respect David Cage's work, so we're going to do all we can to cover that 'un!

@AJ ... we do NOT joke about such things!

May 27, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

Thanks for the reply, Matt, I am looking forward to see what you'll cook up.

May 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEduardo

no reply to my question Matt?
wah

May 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWetz

I really love your great Podcast.
I'm looking forward to every new Episode!

I'm following on Twitter anyway so I suppose I'll get to the goodies that way too.
It's E3 yall.

I fucking love California too.

Your game shorts from before were awesome, but your games commercials are pretty good as well. Methinks you should have got paid for your Skate 2 videos.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJose

The hero of Uncharted 2 (Alan Wake?) definitely looks like Jay Frechette! ;D
