CO-OP 0113 -- CO-OP @ E3 2009: Microsoft - Splinter Cell: Conviction, Forza 3, HALO: ODST, Project Natal, and More

It’s the first official day of E3 and this is our first of three E3 special episodes, but the real announcements started yesterday. Driving the sexiest, purple Chevy minivan you ever did see (it’s so hot there are boob-prints on the passenger and driver-side windows both), we braved the wilds of central California to arrive at the Los Angeles Convention Center in plenty of time to catch the Microsoft event Yesterday. Since then we’ve seen both Sony and Nintendo press conferences, but this show just captures our immediate impressions right after the Microsoft blowout and documents, briefly, our trip south. Note to concerned parents: yes, you CAN draw penises vehicle-to-vehicle through PictoChat. More after the show:

Being at E3 is weird for games media people. At E3 we get to see everything early, we’re not immune to the hype or the excitement of that fact, but everything for us is always tempered by the workload hanging over our heads. Video, in particular, is a difficult beast as we can’t even begin editing until we get back to our hotel after the show is long over. That’s not a complaint—we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love it—but it’s a fact that simply makes E3 lose a little of it’s luster. Ya just can’t help pine a bit for the opportunity to just wander about with a curious eye and no responsibilities save enjoyment of the senses.

Dionysian gamer fantasies aside, this show is a ton of work for us and a ton of fun and the rest of our plans for the week are finally taking shape. The Live Stream will be up again tomorrow at 4pm from the WOOT booth (we’re hoping… technical difficulties involving an utter lack of an Internet connection postponed today’s live show) and we’ll have some live interviews to break up the commentary. Thursday’s live show will be even better with demos of both HALO: ODST and Splinter Cell: Conviction! My personal excitement level for Conviction borders on the inappropriate, so you can guess which of those two demos I’m looking forward to most.

Lastly but not least-ly, we love you. To the fans we’ve run into so far at E3, it’s made our day several times over to know that you’re still with us and following us and are excited to see what we’ll do next. We’ll endeavor not to disappoint!

Looking forward to seeing ya'll reactions to the other conferences, especially to how Sony's motion controller stacks up to Microsoft's.. I thought Sony's was quite good as well.

Why does it seem like Ryan seems to dominate nearly every conversation that he's involved in. I like to hear what the other guy's have to say... Would it be possible to tone it down a bit Ryan?

All of the "Big 3" had really good showings. MS with Natal and Milo. Although I thought the Milo concept was pretty interesting, just more curious as to how accurate Milo can REALLY interact with us people. But ya Modern Warfare 2 was amazing, Alan Wake gameplay FINALLY! Also nice to see Final Fantasy 13 gameplay with english dubs. But they gotta calm down bragging about their multiplat games as if its their own. Nintendo bringing back Mario Galaxy! Suprised that Metroid will be developed by Team Ninja, really unexpected. NewSuperMarioBros. was also interesting. And finally Golden Sun on DS! Now to Sony... theirs was the most fun I've ever watched out of the three, no offense to MS and Nintendo. But the crowd was more lively, especially when Jack Tretton revealed Final Fantasy 14 (Nowhere in my mind did i expect that, thought he was talking about Versus 13 gameplay @ 1st) and Rockstar's new franchise, Agent. Motion controls by Sony may not have been very highlighting or appealing as MS' Natal, but I had fun watching the prototypes being shown, wands look kinda wierd, but they're prototypes. And finally The Last Guardian!!! Improved heavily in terms of graphics, I think now its my #1 most wanted game.

And ya, Area5 you rock! Loved this episode, always nice to hear your reflection and thoughts in...just about anything that involves gaming!

Short but sweet reaction to the announcements. I had to skip past the Brutal Legend skit at the start as it was becoming annoying. I think it was a sturdy show for MS and it made me glad I have the "box of dreams". It was a very smart move jumping into bed with Twitter and Facebook. That can only pave the way for future collaborations on the system. Being in the UK I'm well chuffed about the Sky Player news. Not sure why the haven't sorted out a deal with iPlayer though, maybe that'll come in time. I'll post my thoughts on the Ninty and Sony conferences when the video pops up here.

No wonder Microsoft has been keeping quiet... they "blew" everyone away, including me :D Although I hope the new MGS won't be exclusive to 360... anyways, I'm lookin' forward to the other conferences, so keep em' comin'.

re: Ryan
"Why does it seem like Ryan seems to dominate nearly every conversation that he's involved in."

I'd like to come to the defense of Ryan. He typically has insightful and interesting comments and when I watch or listen to a podcast, I WANT to hear people's take and analysis on things. it's not his fault if the other area 5 participants don't voice their opinions. Just look at the previous episode with 5 guys at the table: 3 people had a really great discussion. The 2 guys sitting across them just kept nodding their heads back and forth. If the shows are going to feature people that have nothing to contribute or nothing interesting to say other than nodding or simply agreeing with others, then BY ALL MEANS, let Ryan speak!

Re: Brutal legend skit
Tediously long. It was almost 1/3 of the podcast. If I wanted to see long drawn out bad comedy, I'd download something off CBS. ;)

Re: conferences
I'm not a big Microsoft fan, but I have to give them credit for once for putting on the best conference of E3. From getting the surviving Beatles to show up to Natal, they had the best presentation of all 3. a few months back, people were wondering if Microsoft had anything to show and Sony looked like it had a more promising lineup in 2009.

Nintendo was a snooze fest.

Sony unfortunately fell victim to the leaks so a lot of what they presented didn't have the intended impact because we knew what to expect. The highlight of the Sony presentation for me was Uncharted 2. This looks to be a solid title and one that might actually push console sales. I wasn't convinced by the new PSP. I own one and I am glad that a slew of new and interesting titles are coming out for it, but I'm not sure sales will skyrocket for the new hardware (it's sexier, but I'm not spending $250 for a second unit when I feel I haven't really enjoyed the one I own to it's full potential).

The demo of the new motion controller was cute but since Microsoft is going to release a 'non-controller' device, they might have the upper hand in attracting new people to the console market.

Jack Tretton closed with saying that 2009 is going to be the biggest year for video games, I wonder where he gets that notion since 9 out of 10 titles that were presented are slated for 2010!

Very good work on (what I assume) was a very quick turnaround, guys.
Good discussion, with the right level of 'veteran gamer' to 'OMG HALO' ratio. I was a little surprised you guys didn't mention the appearance of Ringo, Paul and Big Steven. To me, they were slightly defining moments in the mainstreaming of as they're not exactly small coups, such as having Kojima bop onstage for a minute. Yeah, I realise they probably had money thrown at them to do their bits, but it's not often at all you see two of the Beatles on stage, unless it's for David Lynch, nowadays.
Still, good discussion, I realise you guys can't cover everything, but please try to have a shot of the frying pan in L4D2 for us!

Enjoy the rest of the show, kids.

Love the show. Are you planning on posting the live streams as videos at some point? Keep up the great work!

Think the show was about 25 mins long, took about 8 mins before you even started talking about the stuff at E3 and then it was further adverts and skits. Probably little more than a quarter of the show was about things shown at E3. I love the show but considering i have a 40gb monthly cap this wasn't worth downloading. Some of the skits seem a little self indulgent too, you're like led zeppelin with the dream sequences on the song remains the same film. I'm sure most people would agree that the skits aren't laugh out loud funny, maybe keep the creative side of your filming to the adverts like the seat belt click it advert?

Anyone who holds up Milo as something other than a PR/Marketing move must be ignorant. Milo isn't EVER going to happen on the 360. The best voice recongintion software still fails at time, not to mention the number of dialects in any given language. Milo was more of Peter blowing smoke up peoples backsides. I love the fact he is trying, but it isn't going to happen in this hardware life cycle. And for someone to swallow the ridiculous carrot he dangled is just foolish.

Splinter Cell: Conviction really surprised me at the MS conference, it has gone from no where to a must buy for me. The whole idea of being part of an action film really came across in the gameplay footage.

Project Natal looks to have some real potential, I can see this coming bundled with every 360 in the future.

Halo 3: ODST left me a little cold though, looked very dated when shown next to MW 2 and Alan Wake.

The OMG moment of E3 so far for me, was Left 4 Dead 2. Looks like I will survive another winter in Scotland.

Regards
Al

Great show as always guys.

Personally I loved Rob's Brutal Legend sketch, well funny.

So many highlights across the Microsoft and Playstation presentations, notably for me being Left4Dead 2 and The Last Guardian. Poor showing from Nintendo.
