CO-OP 0204 -- Bit.Trip Core, Cellfactor, Rolando 2 -- Big Brother, Little Brother
My little brother was in town for a while and, as you’ll see, the family conflicts that occur in a gamer household can be, ahh, different than those in other, more traditional family-reunion settings. More after the show:
There still seems to be some doubt out there as to the legitimacy of the iPhone as a “proper” gaming platform. It supports indie developers and full-fleged, iPhone exclusive development houses like NGMoco, however, and the distinction between the iPhone and its seemingly-more-legitimate cousins from Sony and Nintendo is increasingly thin. Rolando 2 is the latest expression of this factoid and it’s a big enough experience to merit its own, full-length feature spot in this week’s episode. Tiff Chow drops by to share her thoughts with Ryan.
Can the classics come back? Cellfactor: Psychokinetic Wars seems to think so in its unabashed homage to the FPS, multiplayer experiences of yesteryear. An amazing feat as a full-on multiplayer experience via XBox Live, it throws in a lot of new ideas, but how well-executed are they? BitMob’s Dan “Shoe” Hsu talks it up with Ryan and Jason on how the experience measures up.
Lastly but perhaps most-awesomely, we got some sit-down time with Gaijin Games founder Alex Neuse to talk at length about the 100th WiiWare title, the excellent second-part in the ongoing Bit.Trip series, Bit.Trip Core. It’s out now, so go download it already!

I really liked the interview mixed in with the Bit.Trip Core segment.
Thanks :) ... it helps when the interviewee is very easy to talk to and has a ton of interesting shit to say ;)
Great show, I'm glad I got to review Core, it's pretty hectic!
Cell Factor seems interesting, but will there be people online playing that for too long if at all? Even with BF 1943 in the same service? Ryan Ryan's got a point with Quake Live too.
Hey there Area5 Team,
Always a loyal fan of your work. Been following you guys since the beginning at 1up. I swear, that site is not the same anymore since you guys left. I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for showing so much passion and effiort in your shows. Believe me, you guys stand out from all of the rest. From fan site videos to full on high production value videos (Gamespot, IGN, even GameTrailers.com). This place is definately my first stop for game info on Tuesday. Keep up the good work lads. You have an awesome thing going here. Something rare that so many other followers are trying to achieve. Cheers!
Dear Area5,
I have seen every one of your shows and I think that you guys and gals are doing a fantastic job. The quality of each show considering what you have to work with is astounding. I think that all of you guys are extremely funny and talented. I began watching this show soon after the 1up show(my old favorite) was destroyed and this has become a suitable heir to that program. Interestingly, I enjoy the segments on smaller games such as indie creator interviews and games that are out on the iphone. My only qualm about the show is I wish that you guys had the access you use to have with developers. Seeing you guys interact with some of the legends and lesser known's was a huge highlight of the 1up show. I know times are tough and that access has to be difficult since you are independent, but I think you guys are talented enough to pull it off.
LONG LIVE AREA5
Cullen
PS: Tiff Chow is hot, get some of the old 1Up show babes back!!
I have to post a comment to say that this show is great, maybe the best vg show on the internet.
Cool characters, cool stories, great editing and above all great selection of games.
Bravo!
Seriously though. You guys should have a chit-chat with Apple. You guys are marketing that damn company WELL and you don't even know it. Look around you fellas. Everyone has a a Macbook Pro, Mac Mini, iPhone, etc (Thanks to your loyal fans for donating). Apple needs to seriously start funding you guys because you are showing the world how awesome this product is. Not to mention your new iPhone games segment.
As for the 'Cribs' episode. Brilliant! Yeah, had some pretty decent gear there my friend. Brought back a lot of memories. Too bad I traded most of my stuff into game retailers before I knew I was getting shafted on trade-in value. Anyway, how's the networking coming along with the AAA companies, such as Squarenix, EA, etc.? I feel that you guys should definately be allowed to interview or get exclusive scoops on that stuff. Positive you could come up with better ideas than your competitors in regards to video content in interviews.
By the way, it would be great to get the original team back together more often. Don't get me wrong, you guys are doing great. It would just be nice to see some old faces and such. Like James Mielke, even though he's heading to Japan for game development (not sure what company though). I thought he was a great asset to the team when you guys were on 1up. Maybe a reunion episode!? You know, a little update on what everyone is up to. Such as Shane B. lending a hand creating King of Fighters XII (Although, I don't think it will sell as well as the competition - sorry Shane). I don't know.... Just some food for thought. Can't wait 'till next week.
Oh yeah. Almost forgot. Please interview Monty Oum, creator of Dead Fantasy I, II and III. That man is blowing up the interwebs on his lated Dead Fantasy III video on gametrailers.com. OK, I'm done now. ^^
I watched this vid and then got CORE. It's so worth 600 points. Thanks!
It is brain-meltingly hot out under the California sun right now. I will stay indoors and buy the Bit Trip games to beat the heat.
Hey Matt, is your real-life relationship with your younger bro the same as it is depicted in this episode? Reminds me of my relationship with my younger sister. It's depressingly similar.
Great show, as always.
@Jason DV ... Haha, no man. My bro and I get along great! He's super cool and super fun to be around, we just thought this would make an amusing idea :)
Dude that is totally insane!

I love the skits with you and ur brother, they are Hilarious :D
Fun episode. The skits with Matt's brother were really funny, kinda reminds me of my brother and our relationship (me being the younger).
Also side note: Matt, your brother is like... so adorably cute x3
Great show! One quick note: CellFactor was developed by Timeline Interactive AND Immersion Software, a Colombia-based game developer. They did a conference on Game Development in my city (Lima, Peru) a while back. Nice bunch. Anyway, great show and, if you're taking requests, please make Tiff a regular.
I just wanted to say i love your show
the way you present your reveiws are so much diffrent from other competitors and so much more interesting
keep up the good work
P.S.
I was wondering why you didnt reveiw 1943
Is it because you dont enjoy reveiwing mainstream games?
Thought this episode was terrific. Love the indie coverage. Think a 1943 review would be cool, too.
3 words my friends
keep up the good work....(some mean respect going out to you guys....at least 17points)
(sorry kinda went over my intended word count)
but seriously Good shit...
Final scene with Matt and bro was HAlarious I laughed out loud. Must have been hard for people filming not to burst out laughing. Great acting Matt A+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Great episode guys. The little Matt / brother narrative was very good, and paid off well over the credits. The Bittrip game looks great fun. Almost worth getting a Wii for...
I'm fairly intrigued by Cellfactor - looks like Quake 3 got resurrected with a bit of the gravity gun!
LOLOL great vid!
A healthier smoke.

@ Eddie E. Givens, Jr., @Cullen Lea --- First, thanks for all the compliments! Very much appreciated and we're all really gratified to read it :). And yeah, we're slowly redeveloping our relationships with the big publishers and developers, but that stuff takes a lot of time and, unfortunately, it takes a bigger audience. The like to see really big numbers when handing out access like you mention, but we're also approaching it from a different angle in that we have such a quality audience instead of just a massive one--kinda like our show itself. I'm hopefully people will come around! And yeah, we always want more of the old crew on, as you say, but it's hard with many of them having moved away to LA, Japan, etc. Fortunately we've still got quite a few around and our independent nature means that we can have people on from places like Giant Bomb, GameSpy, etc.
@Adrian, @Ian --- Definitely going to be doing something 1943!
Thanks everyone for the complients about the stuff with my brother, as well. He's a great kid and I'm glad we got to get him on the show. Should make him a hit with his friends, as well ;)
@123Presto --- Hahaha! Probably the only "good" acting I've ever done in my life ;)
To CO-OP:
If your going to talk about iPhone and iPod Touch games, DON'T Call it an "iTouch". You do not call an iPod Classic an "iClassic". Internet Touch makes no sense and sounds uneducated.
Hey Matt,
WOW! I'm REALLY impressed now. My favorite game journalists actually read my comments and responded. Just for that, get that donation box rollin again! I gotta fund this, dude. You guys have gained much respect from me and my peers in Cleveland, OH. By the way, since I have your attention. What is everyone's favorite console to game on for their own leisure? I own all systems, but it's getting harder and harder to keep up with all of them. Since I get confirmation when a game is decent or not from you all first all these years, I thought I'd ask. Trying to narrow it down to one or maybe two.
Also, how do you guys feel about game developers adding in all this expensive nonsense with their games. I'm starting to see a trend and it's getting rediculous, especially during our recession. Such as the 'Master Chief Helmet - Halo 3' and the recently announced '3 Tier Modern Warfare 2 Bundle'. Night Vision Goggles!? >.> Yeah, getting a little weird now. What ever happened to the rich experience of gaming during the console war of Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Quality games. OFTEN. Excellent library. When developers did not rely on patches AFTER RELEASING a game on the market. OK, my rant is over.
But seriously, I've always wondered what was each of your personal favorite current generation console? I take you guys seriously when it comes to gaming because this crap is so dang expensive! LOL! Oh yeah, and thanks for responding to my other post. Cheers mate!
I loved the bit where Matt ranted at his brother about why being an adult is better, haha.
Great show, as usual. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for more iPhone games
Hey Matt,
Did I just see Ryan and Jason in Redmond around 6pm today? As I approached them near Borders I said "Hey Area 5" and they ignored me. They were really into their conversation about Microsoft. Anyway, they probably didn't hear me and I didn't want the awkward situation of flagging them down to say "Hello", especially if I somehow was mistaken. That said, the Co-Op show is gaining popularity and recognition within the gaming community out here and each week's show is anticipated. Keep up the great approach Co-Op takes to relay news to the gaming community! I'm new to the show, but I love it.
That last skit with your brother was hilarious. Good job.
Cool episode. I loved the Bit.Trip Core segment with the interview. I will probably pick it up now.
I have to say, I'm just not feeling iPhone gaming coverage. You guys cover it very well and with more detail than most (any?) outlet, but I just feel like that much attention towards these games is superfluous given how they're designed to be consumed.
The best comparison I can make is as follows: I love music, but I would never read a "track review", since it would be more informative to simply listen to the track. I'm not saying there isn't a conversation to be had about the track, but there isn't much meaning to listening in on others' conversation when you haven't heard the track itself.
The time commitment and cost to experience an iPhone app is pretty low (as it is for a single song). If you've sold a person on trying it in the first 2 min, that seems like it's enough. Then they can go try it.
Not only is Matt's brother good at all games he is also the best actor so far in Co-op's short history. So the rest of you better step it up! ;)
How do you guys make enough money for all of the games/equipment. When I bought Red Faction, it cost 60$!!!
Is there ANY chance we'll see Bit. Trip come to PSN or XBLA someday?
Okay, I see that you guys are really pushing the Digg thing. I didn't want to say this on the Revision3 forums, but seriously Digg sucks okay. I don't use it. I don't remember my login. I haven't clicked on a Digg link in months, even when they come up in google search. If you are being pressured to get Diggs by Revision3, honestly that's complete bullshit. Show them the youtube numbers. 66K+ for your first show. They've got nothing close. They canceled my favorite Revision show last year, and kept the complete tragedies that are TRS, Diggreal, etc. Don't let them railroad you. I like you guys, but I don't care if you are on Revision 3 or not.
I just thought about your situation some more. You guys don't get Diggs because you have too many outlets! I usually watch your show on Revision3 now so I would not even see the "Digg it" button. You guys should switch to using the Youtube HD player on Area5 so that you have at least higher view counts on youtube. Revision3 is now the destination for viewers of your show. Doesn't Kevin Rose own part of Revision3? Why are there not Digg buttons on the Revision3 page? Do advertisers really look at Digg numbers? I wouldn't.
ah that last scene was good well done matt.
Too much fun! It's been a while since I've seen any of you in person, but I admit to watching the show faithfully and really enjoying it!
I also admit serious bias about the ultra-coolness of this "Big Brother, Little Brother" episode.
Even if they didn't have my genes, though, Matt and Dasan did an excellent job of making the segue story too much fun. GREAT ACTING and HIGHLARIOUSLY HUMOROUS RANT, MATT!!!!! You'd never know that in real life Dasan hero worships his Big Brother and Matt couldn't love Dasan more.
Makes a Mama (even a dissed Mama *ahem*- MATT) mighty proud!
What's as nifty for the gal over 50? I actually learn something about the video game world that "the boys" live in, and that makes me cooler than I was before. Which, judging from my prodigiously perfect performing progeny, is pretty damned cool...
hehe ;)
Keep it up!
Wow the Bit.Trip Core guy's tattoo was really cool
you've done it again trebecht!
Matt, are you drunk enough and is it late enough yet? When are you going to call me? It's high time I get over there so we can have sex. Thanks for being an adult. XOXO
I'm totally in love with Tiff Chow.
Oh, and you're show is great by the way.
