CO-OP 0208 -- The Typewriter -- Fat Princess, Gears of War 2, Wipeout HD Fury

Digg this blog post so that more people find out about CO-OP. It’s how we get paid, yo!

Just so you know, the narrative for this episode was created and filmed days before we found out about the death of a notable figure who’s work is referenced in this week’s show. It was a little eerie, but we went with it all the same. More after the show:

Fat Princess, as an affordable, downloadable, multiplayer-focused title has a lot of parallels with Battlefield 1943. Unfortunately those parallels continue with similar network and matchmaking problems that are simply not conducive to the most positive of play experiences. Fortunately, though, Fat Princess has many a charm which will continue to keep Kat Bailey, Matt, and Ryan coming back in spite of said issues.

No such problems (well, other than the usual) with the latest Gears of War 2 DLC; the All Fronts Collection pulls in some amazing new multiplayer maps and offers a “deleted scene” to play through in the single-player/co-op campaign. David Ellis, Ryan, and, of course, Jason all agree that there’s very little not to love!

Those of you familiar with Ryan’s video game critic career will be long aware of his deep and abiding love for the Wipeout series in all its iterations and on all its platforms. The new expansion for Wipeout HD, entited: Fury is but the latest in the line of ever-broadening improvements for the storied franchise and I can do very little but agree with Ryan as to its sublime qualities.

Great episode guys!!! The final scene was awesome.

You guys are really talented. Everything clicked in the first segment. Talk less about games and do more of that and before you know it you've won an Emmy Award. :D

The narrative this week was awesome and very funny... The Jason sucks balls scene was genius!

And glad to finally see someone cover the Fury add-on!

Have your opinions/experience improved since the network patch on Fat Princess? Or was the segment filmed after the patch?

August 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew Klundt

Val Kilmer was Batman in "Batman Forever," not George Clooney, ergo you all love that movie, just as you should. Also, does Cesar have an embarrassing rash or something? I feel like he hasn't been on camera in weeks, not since he showed us his phat pad. Glad to hear Fat Princess is fun. I've been on the fence on that purchase and will likely commit to it soon.

Many laughs, guys. I dunno if you did it as a response to the hate the food-themed shows got (personally, I still love them), but that was very very well done. Also, Fat Princess looks great.
Question for you - would you be able to do a little preview when each episode comes up just saying - 'Next week...' and listing the games you're covering?

Thank you. I feel like no one else in the world is mourning John Hughes.

Kissed by a Rose is indeed, a great song. Loved the moment where everybody breaks into song!

Do my eyes decieve me, Wipeout Fury Review (Amen) and Finally Ryan comes out from behind the camera to express his opinions on a console game and on a side note kat bailey reminds me of alanis morisette smart and hot ;) and her hair, I swear she has enough hair to meet every celebrities hair demands.

Best into so far for CO-OP. The balls had me cracking up. Good work, guys!

This was a great episode, keep on working guys!

Haven't checked out the episode yet, but read what was written about the Fat Princess connection issues. While initially I would have agreed, (they were really frustrating, and it was near impossible getting into a game), it seems the recently released patch has fixed the issues. I've had no problem connecting to games since downloading it, and don't run into any glitches. Was the episode made prior to the release of the patch? If so, I suggest getting it! It definitely helps.

The intro was the best I've seen yet here on Area 5! Thanks for yet another great episode - keep it up guys!

Hey 'five.

Last week I got the SD version because I'm home for summer with bad internet. Totally makes me appreciate the HD version you offer! Muchos gracias

Bow wow.

After last week's episode, I was a little scared. But this week is probably my favorite CO-OP episode yet. Amazing stuff all around, congrats.

Great Show.

Speaking of Balls... It takes balls of steel to race wipeout in cockpit view. Zone must make your eyes bleed. Kudos.

Matt, the other two music credits at the end, Paul Greenleaf, Nick Vassallo, Pierce Hacquard, and Torrey Holbrook Walker - can you post site addresses for them when you have time please. I'm able to find some stuff through google on some but not all of them.

August 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteraenea's shrike

@Matthew Klundt ... the segment was filmed before the patch. I've heard tell that it's helped!

@regmcfly ... that's a good idea, man, but unfortunately we often have to make last-minute changes to our lineup and have thusly avoided being tied down by a "next time on" kind of segment. If we can make it more concrete in the future this is something I'd like to do!

@novato ... everyone loves Wipeout! They just might not know it yet

@Oson ... Hahha! Yeah, that was an ad lib from Ryan. Timed perfectly!

@Shafnitz ... Balls are always funny. ALWAYS

@LC ... yup! I'm hoping the recent patch has fixed all those issues!

@Three dog ... HD FTW. Glad you were able to get the low-quality version at least, though. Just goes to show that it's a good idea to keep the various offerings

@Wes ... it's the only way to fly, man! I don't know how people play that game in third person

@aenea's shrike ... As far as I know, none of them have tried-and-true music sites with their stuff to download/listen to. Sucks, I know :(

Thanks for your response, Matt.

As long as you guys keep throwing up shows, I'm gonna keep digging them, but thanks for the response! More food episodes please! Seriously, though, just keep doing what you're doing. You are the most intelligent game site out there.

August 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterregmcfly

Oh yeah, that post might also have read like I didn't like the food shows, but really I'm all about them! I'd never have guessed donuts could have met bacon in the crazy space food transfer.

August 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterregmcfly

Yea...George Clooney was in the horrific Batman and Robin movie, not Batman Forever. All of the Batman movies Kilmer were in were solid, I swear. (all 1 of them) ;)

GREAT EPISODE GUYS! I've been critical the past couple of weeks, but this episode really was great to watch. I loved the narrative this week.

Keep this going guys!

BTW, F**k you guys for getting Kissed by a Rose stuck in my head :P

Oh yeah can I buy Fury without buying the original Wipeout HD?

Wipeout HD looks incredible, I'll have to play it once I get a PS3.

As for Gears of War 2 DLC, screw Microsoft, they region locked that crap, so I wasn't able to play it. From the looks of the show and what you guys said, seems I didn't miss much. But it's annoying, either way.

You guys must have done something to your webpage, because it is working properly again for me. THANK YOU!

Kissed By a Rose is in Batman Forever, unfortunately, George Clooney isn't.

The cut to Jason singing with the boom mic made me laugh out loud. Nicely done.

Great episode and perfect John Hughes reference. I've been on a family road trip the last week and watching the SD version on my Dell Mini 9 (netbooks are kickass) has been great. Great you have all the different versions available. Can't wait to get back home to HDTV.

Hi i was just wondering about the song that plays during the credits of episode 207 i've been looking for it but have yet to have found it. Any chance I could get the name of the song?

And great preview of fat princess, i could tell from Ryans facial expressions that he really digs this game and once they iron out the bugs I can't wait to get it.

kiss from a rose ftw XD
plus, i find it interesting to see dlc offer different gameplay mechanics to the core gameplay... perhaps in the future, we can get "spinoff games" through dlc using this method.

I strictly recommend not to hold back until you earn enough amount of money to order all you need! You should get the business loans or sba loan and feel fine
