CO-OP 0209 -- The Jason Show -- HALO 3: ODST Multiplayer Maps, Harbor Master, Facebook Gaming

It takes a lot of brainstorming to come up with our weekly narratives and some ideas are better than others. Well, just about every idea is better than any Jason seems to have. I guess he finally got fed up with the rejection. More after the show:

The new multiplayer maps coming in HALO 3: ODST was the topic of a Bungie-hosted multiplayer event to which our beloved JayFresh and our slightly-less-beloved Rob got to attend; much to the jealous chagrin of the rest of the Area 5 team. They returned, however, with exclusive footage (‘cause it’s actually of Rob playing, not that other people don’t have footage) of them having a pretty damned good time.

It’s crazy to think of the iPhone is generating new genres in gaming, but that’s exactly what’s happening thanks to the nature of the device. “Line Drawing” games are now a “thing” and Harbor Master is that genre’s latest and greatest incarnation. Rob, Jason, and Cesar each fret over the intricate strategies of getting their little virtual boats to and from port safely.

And perhaps not quite an emerging genre so much as a force of nature, Facebook’s gaming scene is rapidly approaching mythical status if one looks at the numbers alone. We give a quick rundown of the biggest and best of Facebook’s gaming offerings, and while we know we’ve barely scratched the surface of what there is to offer, we luckily had Gareth Davis, Facebook’s Platform Manager on hand to chat with Matt about what makes Facebook such an attractive platform for game developers and publishers.

Interesting game segments, but I loved the narrative this week! I honestly believe that Ryan with a daycare full of gamer kids would be high quality TV.

Great episode, cool to see some Halo stuff. Made me want to pop it back in the 360 and play some multiplayer, it's been forever since I've played and the last time I did I had a very limited number of playlists. If you haven't bought the map packs your pretty much screwed. The jason show stuff had me crackin' the hell up...lol robot dick, WTF!

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSergio

The robot dick was ridiculously funny, especially when he showed the drawing! Very cool narrative this week...reminded me of the one where Rob, Jason and Cesar decided to do their own...same style, very funny!

Also a very interesting gaming segment with the facebook games, and very interesting to listen to the guy from facebook and what he has to say about the platform!

And guys link for Digg doesn't seem to be working... Fix please so we can Digg yo!

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCoheno

It was really cool how it was just the area 5 guys this week, sometimes it doesn't feel as if they are featured enough on the show.

I really liked Matt's shirt, very funny. I really liked the facebook part, more so than some of your previous episodes. That interview was very informative and pretty cool to watch.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHarry

I really like the interview/chat style thing that you guys have done a few times now, it works really well to be able to hear what the interviewee has to say, and then here a third parties thoughts on it or their own anecdotes about it, top notch stuff as always.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChurchy

Like Coheno said, the Digg link is not working.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

Area5 did it again!

Everybody loves Jason!

Go see District 9 now!

Do it, Do IT NAUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHH

Good stuff!

I really found the Facebook segment to be especially interesting, but it was also somewhat startling. I've known about such games for a while, but I had no idea just how massive the market and community were. Wow!

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTony

I really liked the facebook segment. At first I thought "what the hell, facebook games?" But those were some serious stats you guys dropped and you did a good job of making a market that was totally off of my radar seem relevant.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRobert H.

LOL Matt's robot dick so funny!

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermysticality

This episode was super super choppy streamed over to my 360 (watching 'Large Quicktime'). I'm sure its something local, but every other video I tried works fine, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

I echo the sentiment about the facebook segment being great. It was! Very interesting stuff. I'll be more considerate of invitations to mafia wars that I receive.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJV Andres

I would love it if each episode had one or two more games discussed, and I don't give a shit about facebook games.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjason

Another awesome show, especially the facebook game segment - I'm interested to see where flash games go from here. Hopefully Vectorpark will try to grab a slice of that pie.

Also, I'm in the market for a blog host, tried out squarespace and really liked it. Your promo mentions using the code 'coop', I was just wondering what it means for the monthly fee, apart from getting you guys some squarebucks :)

digg URL isn't working. Love the show keep up the good work. If you guys ever need an extra...

@han shot - District 9 is awesome.

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterwill cao

It was interesting to see a part of this episode dedicated to Facebook gaming culture. I've never been too into that sorta thing, and I've only dabbled a little bit into Mafia Wars. But this episode has opened my eyes to a new subculture of gaming, like your iphone/touch game segments. Now I'm curious as to if you guys are ever going to dabble into flash games on websites like newgrounds and make a segment for that like you did w/the facebook games

And like what everyone else is sayin, fix the Digg link, kuz' we all like it when you guys get paid XD

@han solo: Must... see... District... 9 :O

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSune

whoops... meant @han shot XD

August 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSune

Once again great episode guys, the writing was very funny.

But anyways any chance of Shadow Complex being covered on Co-op? I'm a huge fan of the original Metroid games, the idea of gaining new abilities which change the game dramatically and allow you to explore more have always interested me. I've been following this game since E3 and can't wait to download it tomorrow.

I absolutely loved the pre-intro segement. You guys have surprising acting talent! Brilliant!

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Lenoch

Loved the show, but seriously the guy with the sunglasses should be the one facing the sun. Rob looked like he hated the Halo maps (or taking a poo) because of the way he was squinting.

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterzwitterion117

I think the Jason show is awesome. Very awesome. Also, I think that the Facebook games section was very intresting and thouhgt it (as with the rest of the episode/s you have ever done) was very well edited.
Also, on a final note. In the anti drink-driveing advert, was that racing game Forza 3? If so, how did you guys get it way before it comes out?!

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDan Barker

Did you guys change something with the encoding of the xvid one? I used to be able to pop the large xvid into azureus/vuze and stream it to my xbox without transcoding but it had to transcode this time. Will give the quicktime one a try later.

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjuv3nal

Great show as always. I never get bored of watching you guys talk about games.

There is a problem though (and this pertains to older episodes).
1337 h4x0rs and Mother Mission's Desserts aren't downloading on iTunes for me. Gives me that gray exclamation point and says "Please check that the URL is correct". Any help with this would be nice, as I haven't seen those shows yet (I wait to do everything on my iPod...it's the Large Quicktime Version, just in case you need specifics).

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeadpoolSkye

I'm an idiot. The Digg link works now. Not sure what the issue was :/

August 19, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

@DeadpoolSkye & @juv4nal ... I submitted these issues to Revision3 to take a look at. I'll let you know if I hear anything back!

August 19, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

@Dan Barker ... heh, no, that wasn't Forza 3 :)

@Zac C ... I'd watch next week's show if I were you. Nudge, nudge, hint, hint.

Re: Facebook games ... yeah, this was an interesting segment for us as well. We had to dive into a bunch of Facebook games and give them a try so that we had some education before inviting Gareth over and it was shocking to see just how big that market is (and growing!). As Facebook becomes more of a platform and less of just a site-for-social-networking I think it'll be ever more difficult for someone to usurp it the way that Facebook did MySpace.

August 19, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

love it. Cheers guys

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterian

Did you all get a Facebook tracksuit top each?

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStacey

I haven't seen rob actually be serious before - totally refreshing and hes really quite good! keep it up!

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStenback

re: transcoding issues. Quicktime, as I suspected it would do, worked fine with no transcoding needed. I should probably just roll with that from now on.

August 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjuv3nal

@Stacey ... haha, no, but that'd be pretty rad if we had :)

@juv3nal ... alright, but I'll let you know if I hear back from Rev3. I know they're changing their encoding all the time as every time there's a software or device update they have to modify their distribution settings and you can imagine how fixing for one thing can break another.

August 20, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

I enjoy this show very much, but I didnt really like how 2 of the 3 segments were about casual gaming. I mean I can bear with an iphone segment here and there but that and facebook in a single episode? No thanks, get to the real games please.

On the plus side, narrative was great.

August 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertravis

Good show guys, I enjoyed the Facebook gaming segment. I love it when you interview people, the other one that comes to mind is the Love feature. I do have to agree with the post above though, the Iphone games are getting a bit old. I'd rather see the ocasional longer segment that covers the Iphone in a broader sense than an individual game each week.
That aside I love what you guys have been doing and i'm looking forward to more :)

Also Matt kudos for going on Rebel FM, it's nice how you guys have stayed tight.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

DUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUNNA BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please have the arkham asylum review in the next show.

August 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatt mythbuster

It's interesting to see how facebook is for example developing. It's defenitely becoming more than a site for social networking, as someone poited out. And by the way - great job. I also loved the narrative.

Stumbled!
