CO-OP 0211 -- 1994 Part 2 -- Wolfenstein, Spider, Super Metroid
Yes, it is 1994 all over again thanks to JayFresh missing out on the Metroid classics the first time around. Such outrages will not stand! It was a good opportunity to bring back a classic and give it the full, CO-OP treatment. Shadow Complex isn’t the only game that’s inspired a kind of Metroid revival around here. Yes, the Prime trilogy was released recently, but even the new Batman owes a lot of it’s design legacy to Samus and her classic, Chozo-driven ways. Would you want to see us cover more classic games like this, or should we just think of this as a one-off inspired by current events? Your feedback matters! More after the show:
Remakes of classic franchises are all the rage these days, and Wolfenstein is certainly the, um, latest of these. Fortunately it’s taken some cues from modern game design and proves to be able to stand proudly amongst its competition. BitMob’s Dan Hsu, Arthur Gies from RebelFM & Eat. Sleep. Game. and 1UP’s Justin Haywald talk it over with JayFresh. Find out what separates it from the pack as well as what could’ve used some more attention before it could have become a new classic all on its own.
The iPhone continues to deliver evolutions in game design that are surprising and Spider is simply the latest we’ve discovered. Ryan, Jason, and Cesar are all suitably impressed by the game’s structure and unique approach to narrative. It’s kind of a platformer while being a puzzle that crosses boundaries with Tempest and holds a unique approach to narrative that is surprising.
And, as I already mentioned, our recent coverage of Shadow Complex struck some extremely nostalgic chords here at Area 5 and when we found out that JayFresh’s gaming education lacked a certain, related, classic franchise we knew it was time to bring back the past and present it as fresh! Pun intended. Also from 1UP and her own, classic-gaming blog Dusty Pixels, Jade Kraus pops in to talk with Dan Hsu, Justin Haywald, Ryan, and Fresh about just what a momentous occasion it was to experience Super Metroid for the first time!

P.S. Robot penis.
an instantly classic episode guys, i loved the super metroid segment and the banter between jayfresh and ryan was some of your best writing yet! i'm going to ask the obvious question, any plans on more "retro" segments in the future? i know you will probably wait for feedback from fans, but consider this fan wanting more. you even made me go re-buy super metroid on virtual console!
Hey Guys,
Great show! I really like that you guys decided to give a full review to a classic game like Super Metroid. I used to be in to games and took about 10 years off playing them. I recently got back into games and have been playing classic games that I missed like Ico, SOTC, and Metal Gear Solid. So I for one love seeing new reviews of old games and I hope to see more in the future so that I can catch up on the classics.
Best, Carl
I like the idea of revisiting the classics, but I feel like they are best suited for coverage during the slow Summer months. As the gaming boom approaches, I would like to see footage and opinions about upcoming titles.
How are the PAX plans coming along guys?
Thank you for looking at Super Metroid! It is my favorite of all time, even surpassing SMB3. I can't believe Jay Fresh didn't play it back in the day.
I STILL shed a tear whenever Gunpei Yokoi's name comes up in the credits. I plan to name my daughter after Samus whenever I get around to having kids.
We covered the original Metroid saga in my gaming newsletter about two issues ago. It's still that crucial.
Great show overall!
Shoe your not that old!!!
That was the best episode in a long time! Maybe it's because "Super Metroid" is one of my most tightly held loves, maybe it's because it pulls back to a simpler time, but I loved seeing it reviewed. Shoe hugging Jayfresh's head to his chest was quite funny as well. I'd love to see some more classic reviews far more than seeing mobile games, but maybe that's just me. I'd love to see you guys go through "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" or something. But yeah, classic game reviews, please!
And keep up the good work!
Oh, and I, as well, would love to see a review of Ico. If I could make a suggestion, you should keep your "classic reviews" (if you do more) to a minimum of 2 console generations ago, just because most of us saw (or at least remember) reviews on stuff newer.
Great Show Guys :)
You guys should totally talk about classic games.
It would be awesome!
Jay Fresh you need to read more about the history of chozo kickass lessons!
My suggestion Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
I will have fury!!!!!
Awesome episode. And HA at Jay being the baby here. The "It's like shadow Complex" at the end had me in stitches.
I really enjoyed this episode and love the idea to revisit classic games. I would love to see more of that.
Great episode, love the RETRO-OP classic game!
More classic games reviews please, the best and worst from PSX,PS2,SEGA,SNES...
Makes me sad that I was born in 1992 and missed these games, Im going to have to find a SNES. But now thinking about it, my first gaming system was a Nintendo 64 and the first game I had was Banjo-Kazooie (a game I still have and still play) a long with my other Nintendo 64 game Super Mario 64 wich is bloody awesome. In fact, I am going on Mario now.
Anywhere, probibly the seccond best episode ever (the best is the E3 planning one). Keep up the bloody fantastic work!
I love the show and I watch it every week. I really enjoyed the Metroid review. I think you should do more. However, I stress caution on over doing it. Maybe do one every few episodes or so. Having said that I would like to submit the game Secret of Mana for a classic snes for review. I love that game!
Laughed so hard at "It's just like shadow complex"
Great show.
Haha Dan covering Jay's ears was pretty funny to watch...
Great show guys
Another awesome episode. Have a lot going on in my life right now and getting to just relax for 30 minutes really helped my day go so much better. I am sure you would have never thought of that.
P.S. ... buy more donuts .... bacon maple donuts.... :)
Great ep. I'm glad JayFresh got a chance to go back and get through metroid. such a good game. I would agree with some of the comments (and disagree with others) not to over-do it the classic reviews. keep it up guys
Sweet retro segment! You guys should definetly do more episodes like this.
Great show guys once again you have awesome'ed me out. Super Metroid is a true gem of a game. I played it once and beat it once and now i need/ am re-playing it on the virtual console. Thanks for shedding light on this for some gamers out there that may have missed this.
I asked already and I'll ask again please release a soundtrack. The track on the Spider review is killer and of course some other truly amazing tracks that i NEED to have :)
Thanks for all your hard work, love Co-Op and Area 5 and Jay "its just like Shadow Complex" ROFL!
COACTIVE?! by super green x o-o?! nice show btw XD
Good show like always, and as much as I liked the classic segment, I think especially with the winter coming up (and early next year) it should mainly be new games, but I think that doing like two classic reviews over the summer would be awesome.
Slow week huh... Well I suppose you had to plug a show.
I watched every episode of the 1up show since it started, and i have also followed all of the co-op shows. I feel the need to mention that the show is losing its flare and i dont feel that interested in watching it anymore. During the 1up days you had the environment of a gaming magazine which kept the show sort of fresh and interesting, it was fun to see these industry people talk and joke around about games. In time more focus was put on narrative which was great, but i assume it was mostly for fun back then, the narrative feels sort of forced now since i suppose you must be running out of ideas.
Go back and look at the early episodes of 1up, the emphasis was alot more on the gaming industry since i guess you were... more immersed in it, as opposed to on the sidelines, and thats what i enjoyed about that show. When you review a game now its a case of "yeah i got this new game that came out last week and i played it at home for a few days" as opposed to something like "i attended this awesome party that had free booze and got my prerelease copy", the second one just makes it more interesting. The reviews themselves are the same as always, but thats not enough. My 2 cents!
When I saw Super Metroid at the title card I was all "What the heck? They must mean the new compilation disc!", but no, it's the real game. So nice to see a discussion on it after so much praise for Shadow Complex last week. I finally got a Super Metroid cart a few years ago after countless playthroughs on an emulator, but damn, the battery save on it died so I lost all my progress. Haven't played since!
*snif*
i loved that you reviewed super metroid! i think you guys should do more classic games. one an episode might be a bit much. but when its appropriate... like right now for example with the release of the prime trilogy and shadow complex. it'd be great for you guys to say "this is where the inspiration for [insert new game] came from." teach these kids about the good ol' days!
Hey, guys. I want to let you know that I really enjoy Area 5, and I would like to share with you my opinion on the classic games.
In this generation of console gaming, we are seeing a lot of classic games resurfacing on all platforms, especially the Virtual Console. Because of this, revisiting these classic games is definitely something I would personally like to see happen with Area 5. It's widely understood that these older games would fill spots for newer games being released for the current generation consoles. Thus, I think a few options should be considered: discussing only the outstanding classics (such as Super Metroid) or those hidden gems; filling a segment with not only one classic game at a time, but two or three genre-related classics; and doing this occasionally, when the time feels right.
Something else I would like to point out are the iPhone segments. I see these games being covered a fair amount of the time on Area 5, but I myself do not own an iPhone (although your discussions are pushing me to get one). As these games may not be widely popular or may not become such, I think it would be better if you fill in at least one more game for the iPhone segments to cover more of the iPhone selection. If the games are much more broad and subject to popularity, I can understand discussing only one iPhone game per segment, but it appears to me that this is not the case. Who knows, though; I don't own an iPhone!
Keep up the great work, Area 5. I will continue to back you up no matter what!
Sounds like more retro games coverage is generally a positive for y'all! Thanks for the feedback :) -- our general opinion is that if it is contextual to something going on in the modern gaming scene then it's something we'd like to do more of. Maybe we'll just do it occasionally just to do it! Either way, we really appreciate all the thoughtful responses to this week's show. Bravo!
@TJ ... Yeah, there are a ton of iPhone games out there and we'd like to cover more, but the only reason why we don't, really, is time constraints. If only there were more hours in the week or if we didn't have to sleep! ;)
@Chris ... Once we were laid off from 1UP, we solicited feedback from the fans and one of the ongoing responses we received that we often covered games "too soon" and that people, really, were more interested in hearing opinions on games that they were already playing or that they could be playing. Not to say that we don't want to do more of that preview coverage you are referring to, but some of that has to do with access and some of it just has to do with an intent to make each segment relevant to people at the time of its release. Still, I hear and respect! Hopefully this holiday season will offer more of that kind of content for ya and our other fans looking for that kind of coverage!
Yep - another vote for retro-goodness would be most welcome. However, I'd be intrigued to see games that you DON'T think have stood up against the test of time, and perhaps not solely fan-service-love-ins. Certainly would be a welcome treat every now and again.
Also - I'm hoping for Beatles Rock Band next week? Say it's so!
Honestly, I'm still surprised that Wolfenstein is seeing a remake. Not that it was a bad series; I loved it in fact. Its just odd to see so many older games coming back with a new sequel lately, thats all.
Love the show, and I've been watching it regularly for a while now. But man, those banner ads that get slapped almost right smack dab in the middle of the video are horrendous. Can't see anything good until they disappear, which seems to take a while. I know you guys need to pay the bills, but at the expense of the content? Ouch.
I liked the classic game review, more would be nice but I don't want it to get out of hand and be more frequent than new game reviews. Thanks.
I love the classic games. they are much more interesting and well done than the new ones. And the idea of its review is simply great! the problem is that it won't ever be like the original version.
Recently started watching you guys and I find the shows more entertaining than most stuff on TV! Keep up the good work (love Plants vs. Zombies)!
You guys should definitely talk about more classic games.
Cover anything as long as it's entertaining and makes me want to watch the whole show. Sometimes my interest fades when the show isn't as focused as others because sometimes you guys really really nail it.
