CO-OP 0210 -- Laundry Day -- Shadow Complex, Little King's Story, Wolfenstein RPG
Ever thought of combining a café, laundromat, arcade, and deli? Brainwash is just that and seems tailor-made for the Area 5 team as a prime hang-out spot. Cesar and Ryan get into a classic nerd debate over their lamest and coolest T-Shirts while the rest of the team just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. More after the show:
Drawing obvious inspiration from games like Metroid and Castlevania, 1UP.com’s David Ellis and BitMob’s Dan Hsu came by to discuss with Cesar and I whether Shadow Complex be rip-off or well intentioned homage to classic and all-too-soon-discarded styles of gameplay. Regardless, its scope and polish make it one of the best downloadable games of the year thus far.
We also tread familiar waters to check out Wolfenstein RPG for the iPhone. Does shooting Nazi’s (in the standard forms of soldiers, zombies, and skeletons) in corridors blend well with role-playing elements? Ryan and Cesar take a break from laundry to discuss.
I’ve been attempting to take over the world, one territory at a time, for weeks with Little King’s Story. This Pikmin-like adventure looked simple at first but ended up spanning over dozens of hours of invading, building, and decorating in service of conquering the unworthy while expanding my empire. Anthony Gallegos of GameSpy.com and Eat-Sleep-Game.com is joined by 1UP.com’s Alice Liang follow up with me about whether the task ended up being more than we bargained for.

Got a little disappointed, hoped that you MAYBE would cover Blizzcon.
or gamescom
great show :)
I need to find that laundry mat
@Matt Also, if you ever go on to 1up and watch an "Inside 1up clip" can you tell me what song they're playing at the end of each clip.
I really like the violin piece
Good episode as usual.
Are you guys going to do something on dissidia?
Sorry, Bizzcon and GamesCom require a significant amount of--you guessed it--money. We're definitely hoping to be in a better financial position the next time these events come around, but for the moment the costs are just too prohibitive for our little indie operation.
I like when you cut to gameplay footage right when Dave Ellis starts saying, "Especially...". /serious
The Divx version is once again kind of broken.
If you try to stream it over to a 360 it becomes extremely choppy. I know a couple people reported this in the comments from last week as well.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed. I never had any issues watching the show prior to last week.
Just finished Shadow Complex had a great time with it, they were able to make the game feel both old school and new at the same time. Most fun I have had with a single player game this year.
This years Summer of Arcade does show that Microsoft are pushing 1200points for an arcade game. While this is more than reasonable for Shadow Complex or Battlefield 1943. I think other games will get overlooked at this price point, for example Flock and Death Tank.
My crystal ball shows next weeks show will include Batman ;-)
Regards
Al
Great show guys...as usual
....anyone else think the guy from shadowcomplex in parts looks like Nathan Drake from Uncharted...?
Keep up the great work...!
Awesome laundromat! :P
@ Jarvie NZ
Same voice actor does both Nathan Drake and the guy from Shadow Complex

Have you guys considered cutting back on the language in order to broaden your potential market? Don't get me wrong, I swear like a docker around my adult friends, and being English I can assure you that the word cunt is truly a form of punctuation. Here's the thing though, I work with kids (where I naturally use child appropriate language) and I'd love to be able to recommend CO-OP to them. Obviously that just isn't possibly when you have a bunch of adults talking as adults naturally do. I love that it has a mature attitude, but I feel sad I can't bring it to some of my students.
It's not about dumbing down, or pandering, or anything like that. Just a simple reflection on the fact that a lot of kids play videogames, they are a huge market of potential viewers for you, and I do want you guys to succeed. Cutting them off, albeit indirectly by parents deciding to stop them watching that podcast with the swearing, can ultimately only hurt you. Which hurts me too, as who else is making this stuff right?
When it comes to what you cover, and how you cover it, that is pretty much all up to you guys. Simply encouraging your guests to say "sod/screw/to hell with that" rather than "fuck that" (as Anthony G did this week) could welcome in more people. John Davison manages very well on his "What They Play" site without needing to swear, and I've heard him let loose with the good stuff when he's on the adult shows. Podcasts like Listen UP don't need to worry about a few kids being excluded, that's not how they earn their money. CO-OP is different.
Just a thought, make of it what you will.
@Goose ... I'll ping Revision3 again and ask them to take a look at it. Thanks for staying on top of this! We definitely want people to be able to get and watch the show in whatever way is best for them.
@Al ... Yeah, unfortunately there are always great games that get overlooked :( -- even if our show were three hours long we couldn't cover everything we'd want to. And that crystal ball of yours seems to be rather on point.
@Jarivie ... haha! Not only does he LOOK like Nathan Drake, he's the same voice actor! Makes for some interesting in-jokes.
@Parkingtigers ... I hear ya, but we've never really tried to reach the younger audience you're referring to. I agree that the numbers there are huge, but they're even larger in the adult/young adult space and it's pretty difficult to appeal to one without losing the other. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that our goal has never been to be "family friendly" insofar as language and subject matter ("Robot Dick" comes to mind). I'd love it if you could show CO-OP to the kids you work with as we're very well aware just how little gaming "television" is out there that treats the medium as anything other than just a toy, but in reality we're probably not going to change up our format any time soon. Part of it is the audience we already have (and that we're trying to grow) and part of it is that we and all of our guests are adults and we're not going to ask them to censor themselves even if we chose to do that for our own staff. Hope that makes sense and hopefully we'll still be around when the kids you work with are old enough to hear our guttermouths without turning around and repeating it to their parents.
@matt chandronait are you saying I should turn off my potty mouth? I guess it does kind of make me sound dumb sometimes...
Great episode guys! I wish I had shirts as cool as yours :)
For the next episode, you're going to review Arkham Asylum, right?
DUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUNAA BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please have the batman arkham asylum review in next weeks show along with dissidia ff.
Once again a great episode guys, I haven't heard anything about Little King's Story other than a little bit on Rebel FM. Now I think I'll consider renting it just to have an excuse to turn on my Wii. And that Brainwash place looks sick...wish we had something like that in Vancouver...
The thing I hate most about your shows is that it ends :).
@Anthony Gallegos ... NO! 'cause if you do then we have to :(
@Sune (and Matt mythbuster) ... in a word: YES ;)
@Zac C ... yeah, that place rules! And don't let the flaws of LKS that we talked about turn you off too much from the game. It's a frustrating experience, but a rewarding one
@Solomon ... Heh, sorry about that. We're working on the 24/7 CO-OP Video Game Network, but that'll take a few hundred million more bucks ;)
That is the greatest laundromat in the world. If I had a laundromat like that near me, perhaps my clothes would be more 'clothy' and less 'cardboardy'.
Also, thanks for the 10% discount on sqaurespace :)
Okay, I don't know who "Parkingtigers" is, but his post on August 26 echoes what I've been thinking about the CO-OP show for months. But Matt's response makes me want to SCREAM. In regards to reaching "the younger audience", you say, "I agree the numbers there are huge, but they're even larger in the adult/young adult space and it's pretty difficult to appeal to one without losing the other." Are you saying that if you guys fail to drop the "F-bomb" on a regular basis, you're going to lose your adult/young adult audience? I certainly hope that's not what you're saying. And then, "...we're probably not going to change up our format any time soon." Good grief, you don't need to change your format, you just need to improve your vocabulary. (Yes, Anthony Gallegos, your "potty mouth" does kind of make you sound dumb sometimes. Well said, even if it was maybe said in jest.)
As someone who watches every one of your shows and reads every comment posted on this site, I've never heard anyone request more profanity. As a matter of fact, after Episode 209, "The Jason Show", where for the first time that I can recall there was an absolute absence of profanity (well, other than Jason's "Robo-dick" idea), I didn't see a single comment asking "where the $%&@ were the &*%$&#@ F-bombs?!?"
The Area 5 team is obviously a group of brilliant, incredibly talented individuals. The quality and appeal of the CO-OP show has NOTHING to do with the dropping of frequent F-bombs. Knowing that your success, both professionally and financially, is directly related to the number of people who tune in, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't consider this significant potential audience (again, Matt says, "the numbers there are huge) that you're failing to tap for this simple reason. Oh, by the way, there is a large group of your "adult/young adult" audience that can do without the profanity as well. Wouldn't miss it a bit.
I'm a big fan, and I'll keep watching, regardless. But I want so much for you guys to succeed and prosper. So here's to hoping that you'll wake up and smell the coffee. (Philz, maybe?)
Yo Yo Yo New to the site, just found the show...
Just wanted to say "thanks" to you jerks..my neighbors must have heard me by now singing "I'm so down for some CO-OP action"...How will I show my face in the Lobby now? LOL.
Quick comment about the F*$K and S#@T, I mean, come on guys, you don't need to change a thing, just add some BEEPS and POW or BOOM, and a cute little graphic or 2 when needed, could add to the humor and allow for the little ones to have some pretty cool mentors IMO.
Last thing: Did any of you guys try Stormrise? The few reviews it got basically ruined the game. I'm sure you saw it but maybe it dropped off your radar after the bad reviews. Anyway I want you to know those reviewers were just plain wrong. The game is very hard to grasp all at once, and you can tell that the reviewers expected something else, and just never learned how you are meant to play the game.....
I have made a bunch of videos to try to help noobs understand this amazing new RTS, and after seeing your shows and your attitudes, it dawned on me to write and request that you do your magic on this game. Maybe you actual gamers can show people the truth about Stormrise.
Here's my Youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/POWERarmor333
But don't go there if you want a new gaming exp. I'd love to have some of you guys play without my help, and some of you to get the inside info. Could make for a great RTS segment. There's a bunch of us on PS3 & XBOX, get at me, lets do this!
Keep up the great work.
I'm so down.

I'm only waiting only to hear what you guys have to say about Batman: AA, before deciding to buy it, especially Ryan about the controls, since I totally agree with him on the new Prince of Persia game! And I'm fearing a bit of the same for this... Looking forward to tuesday...
Oh yeah, and there is also something wrong with the Digg link again this week... It's acting wierd all depending on what link to the page of the episode I use. If I click on comments, it's like it's not even dugg yet, if I just get on the page it says 260 diggs, but under this weeks show page it's only 39 diggs...
Is it just me or has this video podcast lost the whole "pazazz"?
I used to be so excited to download the podcast and see what was going on but now it all feels a little contrived. You guys were much more spontaneous and vibrant before this became a regular feature on Revision 3. You now seem to set up a comic situation as part of the podcast which intertwines with the whole 30-odd minutes feature. You guys are all funny NATURALLY so why do you feel you have to set something up beforeheand. I think you should consider audio podcasts alongside your video podcasts as you'd get more bang for you buck that way. I am in agreement with some others in the comments that we'd like to hear you guys talking about Gamescom, Blizzcon etc. Don't cling onto this video podcast niche solely please? I'm keen to hear your opinions on all the goings on in the gaming world but the way you are doing it now is so restrictive, you are in danger of becoming extinct.
You are a good bunch of guys so don't let this opportunity slip away. Weekly podcast coming out from former (and current 1UP) employees are regularly clocking up 2 hour sessions - not 30 minutes. And in those 30 minutes, we are dealing with ads (understandable) and mediocre comdey sketches, taking up amother 10 minutes!! Please Please Please consider audio podcasts or you guys are going to disappear, well Area5/CO-OP will!
@MarkoUK
I can see what you’re saying but I have to disagree. It still has sufficient ‘pazazz’ to keep me coming back each week and recommend it to friends. Of course a slightly longer episode would be awesome, just so long as it is not at the expense of Co-Op’s main appeal – well shot and edited discussions on video games. You mention that the way its being done now is restrictive, but I see it as focused.
I do however, agree with you that an audio podcast would be nice - actually while you’re at it Area 5 guys, why don’t you shove brooms up your arses so you can sweep the floor at the same time? ;) – Podcasts take a lot of work, and I’m guessing making a show like CO-OP takes even more time and effort. Like you said, other ex-1up/EGM guys have started podcasts, I think that slice of the internets is pretty well covered.
