CO-OP 0313 -- Time Capsule -- Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, Saboteur

Do you remember what your gamer self was doing in 2000? Neither did we, but that’s why we made a time capsule. What would have been important enough to us at the time to put in it? More after the show:

Ryan, JayFresh, and Cesar are all huge fans of Capy Games’ new gem, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. It’s an amazing new puzzle/tactical-RPG almagamation of awesome. They dive into why this absolutely should be part of your DS library.

Exploring an open-world game as a WWII terrorist intent on giving Nazi’s a bad time in Paris may, on the surface, seem like a rippin’ good time, and it is! Of course every open-world experience seems to have its share of quirks and Saboteur is no different. The much-vaunted “boobies experience” actually takes quite the back seat to the slightly marred gameplay of the rest of the game world.

Badass! Thanks :)

Glad you guys are giving Saboteur some press but it seems in vaguely, but I assume unintentional, bad taste to talk about the game's level of polish when the studio was undergoing dissolution right at the release of the game. Who knows though, maybe that was its final final build.

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRobert

@Robert ... You can only really judge a game the way it was released. While I agree entirely (as I'm sure Ryan and Cesar would) that the game clearly would've been better had it not been sent out by a studio that was being forced closed, the game still stands on its own.

The time capsule that everyone wanted to forget :( rest in peace 80s.......
Nice episode for co-op!
In the coming weeks I expect to see Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Dark Void, BioShock 2, and Army of Two: 40th day!
Keep it real Matt.....

I loved this weeks show! I have a question though...how do you guys make your money since technically you don't have a job?

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAaron Beatie

@Aaron, they get their money from sponsorships, commercials, ect.
amirite?

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWilliam

Daft Punk!! nice :)

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbaptiste

@Novato ... your predictions are usually fairly spot on. I would expect to see several of those appear ;). I shall, indeed, endeavor to keep "it" as real as possible, sir!

@Aaron ... Yeah, William is mostly on the money there. The sponsorships/commercials are part of our revenue base. Every time a viewer uses one of those promo codes we get a small bounty on top of the flat sponsorship fee. Unfortunately the ad market is EXTREMELY weak for internet video. I can't even begin to express how little money there is in it. This will change. We're actually ahead of our time as the market still hasn't sorted out the best way to monetize internet video which, by rights, means we should be doing something else. But that's why it can only be one of the pillars of our business. The other is contract work. I'm working on an additional page for our site right now, actually, that's a portfolio of the work we've done in that regard. Some of you might have seen the videos we did for Turn 10 and Ignition (which is why we didn't cover their games on our show) and we did a run of 9 shows in conjunction with Microsoft/1UP called LiveUpdate which we're hoping they'll want to pick back up. Essentially, we can't survive on sponsorships alone. That's also why the donate link is up. We don't really get much in the way of donations--it's mostly there because we have no merchandise to sell (we're working on that) and to give us a small savings from which to pull when needed if we have any future shortfalls. All that being said, we haven't had to take on any debt, yet, to stay afloat. Given the financial climate and the fact that we're still a business in its infancy, that's something I'm extremely proud of.

Hey guys, great show as always. The digging was better this week too :)

For Merch have you considered working with the guy or girl (forget which) Robert Ashley uses for his Life Well Wasted Posters? They seem to do reasonably, so it might be a decent way to start with your merch.

Also Matt I love hearing you on Rebel FM episodes, it's great that you guys have ended up/staid so tight. Any chance you could whip some of the other guys until they make a guest appearance? I'd love to hear their opinions on games in a longer less edited format.

Or you could just make a podcast, but I suspect while you would definitely get thousands of listeners it's probably too much work and time for bugger all money.

Anyway, keep it up, you guys are the best out there.

@ matt Happy New Year, hope you have a great one

Looking forward to your coverage of Mass Effect 2. Have been playing through Dragon Age over the last couple of weeks. Looks like Bioware will be getting all my money at the start of 2010!)

Are you planning on another "reflections" release this year? Seems like there has been a ton of great games last year. Infamous being my fav. (UC2 was too linear, but still damn good).

Nice episode guys. I even paused and thought back to where I was ten years ago. Also I have to ask, what's the story with the ninja sword in the time capsule?

Thanks for covering Capy Games as well. Us Canucks are always proud to see some Canadian game devs get mentioned in the media.

Good episode. I love checking out the oldschool games. new wii mario is reminiscent! I play it and puff the e cig all day.

Hey guys, I like your show, and I've been watching it since it started out, but I have to tell you guys... it seems to me that the chubby guy gets to talk a lot more and he seems to interrupt what other people have to say. No offense to you chubby dude but look at the sabotage review, that other guy wanted to give some input but he is constantly interrupted. Maybe I'm just thinking too much into it but I would like to hear what others have to say, not just the chubby dude. Anyways, I wish you guys the best of luck and I hope things turn out awesome with EGM again!

@Peter ... Thanks man! Ryan and I are both going over to record the next RebelFM tonight, but yeah, we gotta get some other Area 5 guys on. I know Arthur and Anthony are super down to have any of us on at any time, so I'll try to put the pressure on to get them over there!

@Al ... I can think of far worse places for your hard-earned dough to go! Super excited for the DA:O DLC!

@scarbuck ... Yup, we recorded that last night. It will be a big ol' epic two-parter just like last year's. Hopefully people enjoy it as much :)

@Mark ... well it got cut, but the sword is just in case there's a zombie apocalypse, that way we have a bladed weapon with which to fight off the hoards and won't have to rely on ammunition. ESSENTIAL.

January 13, 2010 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

Can't wait IN 10 YEARS to see you dudes open up the time capsule again. Heck, you might even have some new Area5 people on the show by then.

Would love to see you guys do an extra making of show some time. Would be really interested to see the process you guys go though each week, how shoots work behind the scenes and what workflow you use for editing. Shame you guys never got to do the PAX panel, or in its original form anyway,

January 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermats effect

Thanks for Co-Op guys.
I'd love to see a discussion on MAG sometime after it's released on the 26th.

BUT what I really want to know is the new winter Olympics game any good? LOL
I just haven't found one on par with "Winter Games" on my old Commodore 64.

January 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWisco

Great post i read it already and i got more information from your post.
Thank you.

January 15, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterenozth

@mats effect ... with any luck we'll be able to do that at this year's PAX!

@Wisco ... I can almost guarantee MAG will appear on our show. Man, I'd love a good Winter Olympics game! I love the Olympics in general and it would be awesome, to me, to have a great gaming experience surrounding them.

I love the podcast - but quite frankly, unless Jay Leno slips on a banana peel on a podcast, or a podcast has its 1000th episode, or Rush Limbaugh chokes on a ham sammich on a podcast, I don't care to see ANY podcast in the digg top stories.

January 15, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersdf

Just baught Critter Crunch om PSN because of you guys...and i LOVE it! Can't stop playing the damn game even though I should be writing my BA dissertation that needs to be done on friday!

Great show once again...will have to go get Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes now too! Those Capy guys are awesome!

January 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCoheno

Two quick things:

1. Again you guys are the bee's knees!

2. Street Fighter 2010 was actually the first SF game that i played back when i was a kid before I broke open the piggy(robot?) bank to procure a SNES. I hated that game. I can tell you with the utmost certainty that that game was a major cause of kid rage amongst a good portion of my family and friends. How dare you bring back such horrible memories....sob. :P

I believe the message was directed more to their current viewers, urging us to digg the article to spread t he word. But trust me, its a solid podcast with great perspectives, and a top-notch production value, if you're into games, you won't be disappointed.
