CO-OP Live 0106 - The FINAL CO-OP EVAR!: Alan Wake, Bit.Trip Runner, Enviro-Bear 2010
We’re sad to see this particuar adventure come to an end. Area 5 isn’t going away, though. We’re still going to be doing a ton of work for EGM, so that’s where you’ll be seeing the majority of our gaming editorial work going forward. But that’s not all that’s happening! I wish I could say more… I know I’ve been promising more for MONTHS, now, but it’s just bad juju to say something is going to happen before it’s actually on the way to happening. That being said, we couldn’t have gotten nearly this far with out all of you and WE LOVE YOU FOR IT! Thanks for sticking with us through so much ups and downs and thicks and thins and rice and beans. You’ve made it all worthwhile and we’d have had to shutter our doors long, long ago were it not for the fabulous fans that make everything we do worthwhile!
Oh, right, the show! Alan Wake is finally here! 5-plus years is an epic development cycle for any game, and for one as high profile as this, it has some huge expectations to live up to. Ryan and I disagree on just how successful it was at achieving it’s unique goals. JayFresh sat in on this one, as well, and had some great thoughts to share from the viewpoint of someone who’s now in league with a horror-game developer.
As mentioned above, Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games joined us to talk about the latest (and some would say, “greatest”) of the Bit.Trip series of games for WiiWare. Very reminiscent of the classic Vib Ribbon, Bit.Trip Runner has the same kind of complimentary art+music style of all the other games in the series while being uniquely approachable as both a platformer and rhythm game. We play it LIVE in front of all of you while Alex kindly takes questions from all the fans.
Eviro-Bear 2010 was quite a mystery to many people until it popped up in this year’s IGF awards at GDC. It’s a tough game to get just by looking at it and an even tougher game to explain, but Cesar and Jason do their best as we head through the local In-N-Out drive thru.
Finally, we have an extended community segment where the Area 5 crew, past and present, and Alex Neuse take questions via Twitter and talk about what it meant to work on CO-OP, the fun we had with Revision3 and where we’re going next.

Looking forward to watching on Saturday and I just want to say the EGMi stuff has been really great. Looking forward to it every week. Did I see right on twitter that you guys have a new member of staff too?
I downloaded the high quality 720p file, but it looks very, very compressed. Matt, do you know if this is something that Rev3 is going to fix? It's barely unwatchable the way it is.
It was nice to have my question read on the last episode of co-op. gonna miss the show, but I'm looking forward to whatever you guys make next. the EGMi stuff is amazing :-D
I'm getting some weird visual distortion going on here, is anyone else? I downloaded the large WMV version by the way.
You didn't mention Starcraft II & CivV! I can't wait to play those games :)
I will miss Co-op so much I may only have gotten on the 1up band wagon for a year before the 1upocalyps. You still where something I have not found anywhere else online and inspired me to start my own show and site.
I love you guys and will miss you dearly.
I'm so sad that I couldn't watch the final episode live, because the stream video didn't show up properly. Then, I thought: "Tomorrow, I will download the show in glorious high definition, without glitches, and watch it over and over". And this comforted me. But now I am sad again, because the highest definition version (coop--0322--farewell--hd720p30.h264.mp4) looks awful! Please, check this out and let us download it again, we want to store it with all COOP's good memories!
Yeah, all of the videos, including the 900MB 720p one, look horrible. The Revision 3 intro looks crisp, then from the Coors logo on it's badly compressed and blocky and the audio is very quiet. Nearly unwatchable.
That was a great show of Co-op Live even though that was the last one and the show only lasted 6 episodes........At least I got to be on the show!!!!!
@Caesar sorry, I spelled the twitter account wrong; it was supposed to be dudefromnovato, not dude_fro_novato
@Matt Since I preordered the shirt; should I be getting it soon?
Also, maybe a chance for a mini show; once a week; like only two minutes:maybe the retro PWNage idea? (I'll pay you) :)
Terrible quality - can you re upload?
Needs more Autechre in the soundtrack........oh yeah Chandronait, I saw your t-shirt.
Been with you guys since I first watched an episode of 1up show on a dvd packed in with the magazine and I'll definitely tag along with you guys going forward.
Sorry for the super-ultra shitty quality everyone! I've emailed Revision3 and they say they're looking into it! I'm sure it's just some stupid glitch, but it sucks it had to happen on our last show :/. Hopefully they just need to re-upload the files and all will be golden. I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from them!
None of my favorite game reviews said anything about Red Dead Redemption... I wonder why. It's an amazing game.
@mats effect ... we do! His name is Rick Curnutte. He'll be introduced more formally, shortly :D
@Ben M-J .. thanks man! Really appreciate it. We think we're going to have some great opportunities to do some awesome work with those EGM peeps.
@baptiste ... OMG! You're so right! CIV V is WAY huge on my must-play scale. Man, can't believe I forgot that one :p
@Conor Hughes ... thanks for all the support, man. Fortunately you can still see our stuff through EGM--that's going to be the main outlet for our gaming editorial--but we've actually got some cool plans in the works for another project or two that we think people are really going to love :)
@Novato ... Yeah, you should be getting your shirt any time now. Email me if you don't receive it, soon, and I'll bug Attractmode until they get you one. My email addy is matt at area five dot tee vee.
@Fox16 ... What do you mean?
@Didier .. It's people like you that make this all worth it! :D
If I'm not wrong, back in December 09 it was stated the EGM show will be much like 1UP Show+. I hope this is still the case and I'm looking forward to it immensly.
@Matt It came, it conquered, and its awesome! I like the shirt and I can't wait to see the next line of shirts from area5!
THANK YOU!
Loved the show (all of them!) and will miss it greatly. Hadn't known that EGMi was the next thing I should be looking for...so google here I come! Thanks for all the shows and best of luck guys!
HD versions are back up! Revision3 fixed the issues, apparently. If you're so inclined, please re-download the HQ versions of the show and see it in all it's HD goodness :D

As much as I enjoyed co-op it really felt like you guys are video people and that you don't really know much about game reviewing. You all seemed to repeat the same things other reviews would say which came out weeks before yours. On the other hand, this is the first time I remember you saying something 'negative' about a game, and you really had some bad stuff to say about Alan Wake. I think after saying you don't read other people's reviews you really lost some people because that's what any professional would do.
Good luck with your future endeavors and thanks for the 1-up show/co-op :D
I think a review of Alan Wake without mentioning Stephen King at all is kind of missing the point.
I will miss you guys!
You do realize that ending the will kill your site and plans you have to make a business out of anything. Because lord knows I will not be coming back if there is no show in my podcatcher for a while.
I did not even realize EGM had a website.....
Yep, apparently google does not either. Nothing comes up.
Congratulations on completing the Co-op series and successfully finishing Co-op Live. I've watch the first couple of installments of your work with EGM[i] and it looks fantastic. It's nice to see the pre-recorded, edited work again. Can't wait to see what you do next.
Also, will there be a way to download your EGM[i] work for offline viewing?
Keep it up guys, we're pulling for you.
Question, are you guys covering E3 this year? If so will it be for EGM, Area5.tv or both. I do hope so :)
Goodbye COOP. I hope you guys move on to a more successful show/blog or whatever. Just please bring us video and stuff. I like the EGM stuff but its so much coller to see your faces. Thats probably just me because i've been around since the 1up days and been following you guys for almost 4 years now. Thanks again and good luck!

Do you see?
Joypod is better than this tripe......
@Matt
Kudos! Awesome editing for the 1up's most antcipated games of 2010.
Check it out on 1up.com
P.S. Sharkey is a boss! Hire him already! Have you seen his whiteboard videos?!!!
Simply epic.
I CAN SEE IT!!! But.....dum dum dum. Yeah, Madlib on the beats. Eating the sausage and bringing the pastry TO THE FIRE!!!!!!! La La la la.....errrr.....fire it. Fast. Then run, don't look back. Its all relative enyway eh tubbo? yes. thats the game!!!!!!
I hate you for taking away CO-OP, by the way. I have expressed this to you before, but:
Matt, Jason, Rob, Cesar:
Fuck you guys. Rob can't even play video games anyway.
Ryan, Jay:
You're cool.
Also, Ryan: Sorry about that nerf dart to the face from across the living room.
You have to admit it was pretty ninja though.
:D
I always loved your game reviews but the 'skits' in between were cringeworthy. You are much funnier unedited (on podcasts for example) than you are when its all scripted and (badly) acted. Please stick to your strengths for the next thing!
Huxley are you serious? I loved the show for it's skits and I've loved it since the 1Up Show... The new live format was more than disappointing to me as it lost the campiness and really cheesy fun that was present in all other episodes.
