CO-OP 0001: Reflection Part 2

Part 2 of our 2008 retrospective comes to an end. A dozen former editors from EGM and 1UP conclude their discussion about the most meaningful games they played last year. Thank you, everyone, for your patience as we transition into this new company. Our PayPal account has finally been unlocked so now we can order some of the crucial pieces of equipment that will allow us to forge ahead and get back to a regular schedule.

We are the #2 most subscribed Youtube Channel this month! Thank you so much for the support. You can also download the show at Vimeo here.

Love the format. no filler, no stupid sketches, and you guys talk about what makes the game fun...the essence if you will. would love to see more of when you guys DO disagree.

great job, guys

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergoldenchild

Very cool. Glad to have the whole package now. Poignant ending. I'm sure you guys WILL do it. Congrats.

Thanks for the great work guys! The weekend IS confirmed!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMarco

Enjoying the show! Thanks.

However, the download from vimeo clearly shows that the footage is not de-interlaced. Could you guys look into that and fix it for the next show?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteremonk

It's nice to have you back.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

Amazing. Loved the ending.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJames Taylor

Just the best way for me to start my weekend. I had a shiver of happiness down my back when i saw this was up as it felt like nothing had changed and everything was alright. Keep it going (will keep donating for each episode put up!)

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTom Vincent

it's starting to feel like fridays are back again.

holy shneiks, I love the split-screen. genius idea - I can't believe you guys made it happen so smoothly and quickly. it must have been simmering in the labs for a long time.

don't settle for anything but a rocks-the-ass theme song.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersdf

Fucking magical guys, I love it! Keep it up!

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Weekend has finaly come!

Great show guys, really like the editing as someone has said already the splitup of the screen is really well made.

And the beatiful ending with you three guys at the balcony, the text could almost say "this is the beginging to something great"

Also really like that little piece of music at the end.

Keep it up guys, you are doing great, can't wait for next episode.

Have a great weekend!

I cant wait to get home and watch this.

The hole in my heart that was the 1up Show has been filled with CO-OP goodness.

Now show more of Jay beating on Rob!

ha, as if. rob would turn jay into a grease spot if he wasn't such a peace-loving fellow.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersdf

I've made a "tv show" list & area5.tv is the only one on Fridays for me :) Hope to see more of this of course! It's good to see that you're doing alright.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlec

Loved part 2, definitely looking forward to what you guys can put together now you can get some better equipment. The sound levels between recorded footage and in-game action were a bit of an issue, but I know you guys are aware of it and will hope to have it licked soon.

Ending was, as others have said, wholly appropriate.

Are you guys going to throw a purpose-built banner together so that all of us can pimp your site long-term?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter‘CO-OP 0001: Reflection

i'm glad to see that the presentation of the show is not that much different from what you guys produced on the "other sit3" show.

tremendous power, schalbs to y'all.

i wonder, what a dedicated segment to how everyone is doing outside of area5.tv (former 1up, like the Shoe), if it could be worked in, what would others think of this idea?

as we're all interested

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDustin Perez

Great stuff guys. The split screen stuff is a nice addition and a good way of showing that this is going to be different than the previous show.

Also, am I correct in assuming that the balcony scene at the end was added afterward? It was kind of like your way of saying "yeah, we know our sound is bad, but we are working on it."

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDrWorm

Amazing stuff, the boys are back in style! Is this going to be a weekly show going forward?

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Just finished watching part 1; part 2 is buffering now! I love the free-flowing discussion here, and it's obvious that you guys have put an immense amount of work into this. It's great to hear that you guys will be able to keep it up with the donations you've gotten.

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSamit Sarkar

Amazing. you guys can do it. great show, keep at it :D

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTidus3000

Can't get the Vimeo download to work on my PS3. My preferred co-op watching platform. :(

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShoki

You would be #1 most subsrcibed on youtube if it wasn't for 'some girl' who pretty much took over the internet a few weeks back :/. Keep up the good work!

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLewis G

Awesome episode. Maybe you should start trying a small subscription model. Bites are free, these episodes are $5 a month? I want to see you guys keep going, and for that you need MONEY!

Also, as game magazines all seem to be dropping as of late, I've started my own. Check it at my site (linked in my name).

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDean

Hey guys great job with the new videos. Seriously, they are great and better than anything 1UP has published since the layoffs.

Just one question/suggestion...

I've noticed that a lot of you guys who were laid off have made your own blogs/sites, and my idea is why not put them all together onto one site. For example you guys currently have Co-Op (and specialize in videos), and the guys at Rebel FM have their podcast (not video). Why not combine all your effort and funds into one site?

Wouldn't it basically be 1UP but under a different name. It would just be one place for all you guys to put your current podcasts/blog posts/videos. You all basically work together still. An example would be where Matt/Ryan were also on Rebel FM the last episode. If you guys are all still helping each other out why not make it one big site, and bring 1UP down!!!! J/K

I think it would be a good idea because it would basically be a site for all the 1UP fans to go see all your work. Instead of going from site to site to see your work.

It would grow a lot faster, get a lot more buzz, and probably increase the amount of people who want to advertise with you guys. Instead of 4 good sites, why not make one great site? Advertisers would prefer that. Which means more money for you guys.

Just a thought

Anyways keep up the good work. You guys always put out quality stuff

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatt G

Thanks for the great episode. I loved the closing shot when the camera panned up to the horizon. The only problem I had was the screen got this ripple in it when ever the camera panned which was weird, yet kind of cool. It might be a problem with Vimeo though.

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

Watching the second half of this episode was great. It's amazing how, even as such a large group, everyone seemed to mesh so well with one another and you can tell that you are all truly friends.

Seeing the line of big names file out the apartment was something else as well. You guys are very lucky to know so many great people, and you know you have the support of all of us.

January 31, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValke

Sound levels are a bit off....
In-game sounds are way louder than the talking. It's quite annoying, should look out for that one the next episode.

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMarco

Was #1 Boxxy? Did you guys get beat by Boxxy? Did you?

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLawL

Hey Guys,

Great concluding episode! And thanks for posting this up on Vimeo, the quality is so much better. I like the route your going down, this episode almost felt like a TV show, with a rough kind of plot emerging at the end.

I think if you ran some narrative through each episode, each game/discussion you have relating to that narrative theme, you could charge for it as an iTunes TV show. It would also draw in new watchers.

Keep up the good work. I'll continue watching.

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercitizensparks

We need good video gaming podcast like yours. Please keep up the good work. I'm sure it will lead you guys to some interesting venues at some point!

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPascal Gauthier

Seriously, you guys need someone who's into Nintendo.
Smash Bros. Brawl was definitely one of the most high-quality core games I played this year, and not even a MENTION in all of this.
I suppose you could argue it's targeted at a less broad audience, but if you look at the sales figures, I think you'll find it had pretty popular appeal.

Not that none of the other games you listed didn't deserve to be mentioned -- I've played a lot of them and they were in fact very good.

Just pointing that out. ;P

Great editing, though, I love it.
Hopefully now that you have better equipment some things will be a bit more polished -- though I must say, you're doing a good job with what you've got for sure!

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterD3stiny_Sm4sher

Awesome job guys. Keep it up! Oh yeah, more snacks please.

February 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRobert

What a great start guys, I'm really looking forward to your next episode, they really are a highlight of my weeks. These shows really help me get through my work days and on that note I have a minor request. I realize you guys are just now able to start purchasing equipment, but this is actually something I noticed on the 1up show. The sound levels for you guys talking are a lot lower than the game scenes. When I watch this stuff at home it's no big deal cause I can just crank it, but when I'm at work I have to fiddle with the volume controls to turn it up when you guys are talking and turn it down when the games are playing. I don't know if I'm alone but I would really appreciate it if you guys could even out the sound levels so I could leave it at one volume setting and still hear what you guys are saying as that is the best part of the show. Thank you though, because without you my job would be a lot more boring!

February 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterw00t!

Guys,

Why doesn't the mp4 off vimeo work on my iPod 5th Generation?

I like to watch episodes via that.

Can you help? I'd rather not have to convert it.

Thanks.

J.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJason Ritchie

The file you can download on Vimeo is a high-resolution MP4 that is not meant to be played back on ipods. We can only upload one source file to Vimeo; their back-end takes our source file and converts it to a format that can be streamed via their site. Youtube does the same basic thing, though their conversion process is different. (That's why the file appears interlaced on Vimeo, and not on Youtube. Interlacing will be fixed in the future by us, as well.)

Because we can only upload a single file, we wanted to use the highest quality source possible. If I made a file that was playable on ipods/iphones/etc, the quality of the web version would suffer significantly. That's why we've been doing it the way we have.

I apologize to everyone who can't watch the episodes in their format of choice. Once we get all this business stuff worked out over the next few weeks, I'm sure we'll be providing the show in a wider variety of formats than we have ever been able to before. So please be patient with us. We're trying to be frugal during this period of transition.

Thanks for the reply Ryan. I appreciate your interest in your supporters.

By the way, just finished watching Ep2 and enjoyed it very much. I liked the end bit there. Looking forward to more interesting stuff.

Keep going. I will try to support you.
