CO-OP 0004 - GTAIV: The Lost and the Damned & Street Fighter IV

This is our last episode of Season 0. We'll be back in a very big way with Season 1 on Tuesday, March 10th. How big? Um... pretty big. You'll see.

Fulfilling expectations with an expansion nearly the size of some full games, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and the Damned brought Dan Hsu of SoreThumbs over to talk with Ryan and Cesar about their different approaches to the game.

Anyone that's familiar with our work will be resoundingly unsurprised that Street Fighter IV is a somewhat of a big deal around here. We were going to include footage of Ryan's shrine, but you're only allowed to bask in it's presence in the nude. GameSpy's Miguel Lopez grabs a beer and joins Ryan on the balcony to hash out the good and the bad (mostly the good).

As you probably saw with our last post, our first HD camera arrived! This week was our dry run just to see what it would take to shoot and edit in HD. It's certainly more time consuming, but it was a resounding success and we can't wait to put out our content in the best format for showing off every last flaw of our skin and all the micro stains on our clothing (we're messy eaters). That won't be this show, however. The Season 1 premiere will also be the premiere in HD. And the premiere of our new theme song. And intro. And... other stuff I can't reveal until then.

That was an awesome episode....Im now tempted to buy GTA 4 on 360 just to play the DLC, when I already finished it on the ps3.
Cant wait for season 1.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTNTMNM

Great episode guys. Keep up the good work

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatt G

Im always surprised by CO-OP. It keeps getting better. Real slick editing. I love the split screen with the game footage and the guys standing round on the street bantering.
Mind you, I watched 1upshow religiously so Ill probably be doing the same with CO-OP.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHilts

Great episode, one of the best yet. Really looking forward to the 10th!

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Congratulations guys!

nice little edit at the end lol and grats! I haven't played a SF game since I was like 9 (I think that's when sf2 came out) every time I see something on SF4 I wanna go and get it.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Another great episode. Are you guys going to talk about Fable 2, or did it come out too long ago?

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew

Hahaha, amazing ending! I like it. You guys also have a mint apartment! :-)

Stay classy.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPeanut

Frakking hilarious editing guys. Keeps getting better and better. Great anecdotal segments, great in game discussion, great side stories.
And my apologies to Fresh...I didn't mean to laugh at the end. It just sorta came out, ya know?

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterOsakaJack

Awesome show! can't wait for the next one. Please use more San Fransisco in the background :) it makes me travel

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBaptiste

Another winner, and congrats on the contract, can't wait to hear the details. Shower scene notwithstanding, am I the only one who thinks Jay Fresh isn't a half bad actor??

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWernhamHogg

Great stuff yet again. 4 episodes of awesomeness. I was also surprised that my college is directly across the street from a biker gang hideout: http://www.collegeprofiles.com/images/stevens_tech.jpg is the main building on campus, and looked like the building you see when you walk out the back of the bar at around 18:04.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterascagnel

Really? Serious? This is a normal conversation for anyone who enjoys a particular game. Why is this a video? Oh and if that is your real hair "husky" guy in red... CHRIST. Oh and lose the bear Grizzly Adams.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGet a Haircut

@OsakaJack ... not to worry, he knew what he was getting into ;)

@cmpLtNOOb ... yeah, he actually left for Arizona this week to "hang out with his family" but I think we all know where he really went. Two words: Opera Lessons.

@ascagnel ... Oh man!! I wish we could have shot there! That would've been ultra-badass :)

@Get a Haircut ... Allow me to address your questions and insightful critiques in order:
1.) Really.
2.) Only on Wednesdays.
3.) It requires at least one acquaintance of equal timbre.
4.) Our phenakistoscope is in the shop.
5.) We appreciate any and all prayers said for and/or against us.
6.) After we saved him from an inhumane hunter's trap set maliciously within the bounds of the Denali Nature Preserve, we felt it only right to set him on the mend. After several years of recovery, it was clear to us our furry friend would never again be able to survive effectively in the wild and we thus felt it our moral obligation to keep him. To let him go now would be a grave—and for him, fatal—mistake.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermatt

Excellent episode! The end was super awesome: hilarity AND a triumphant score set to high fiving.

I'm so excited to see who you guys signed with! EEEK!

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChrisDeGozaru

Congratulations... As iv'e sad before thank you for all of the effort... Entertainment is important at times it can be the only truly positive thing... Most of us aren't there yet but, things could still be better... and the news of your new found success concerning Area5 is awesome.

Disjointed as ever,
WTF in Texas signing off

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterwtfruTX

I'm really excited for everyone. When do we find out what the new contract is?

Don't think "Street Figher 4" is that great. Street FIGHTER, on the other hand, that's one rad game.

Can't wait for what you guys have in store. Seriously!

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commentera.p.

Good job, guys.

February 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPeregrine

Velvet Underground in GTA, fucking awesome.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGert

congratulations on the contract guys! area5 is getting better with every episode - i think you already surpassed the level of quality you displayed while still at 1up. keep up the good work and keep making my favourite gaming webcast. :)

Man, that storyline was clever as f***. I really enjoyed that layup of Jay's song, which then came back at the very end of the show. Great flow, good stuff.

Thank you, and looking forward to season 1 :-)

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMrCase

Are you guys going to have an Area 5 Snack in HD this week? That would be an awesome tease. Anyway, great episode, I really like where you guys are going with it. I'm almost more excited about your business deal so you guys can get payed.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Another good one. I've got two comments.

1. The split screen on SFIV with two different matches going on was just too confusing. The split screen stuff in general works, but in this case my brain was on overload.

2. I really liked that wipe when discussing the film grain in GTAIV. Smooth and looked great.

Lookin forward to the announcements and whatnot. Congrats on being able to, oh, live the life.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Really enjoyed the show guys.

It seems like you're happy with the news.

Looking forward to what you do next.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJason Ritchie

Great episode as always...Congrats on the contract and hope to get some insight into it.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfrags81

Great show dudes. Looks like you've hit your stride, this is way better than the 1up Show. Favourite part: the shower edit at the end. Hilarious. Loved that you set it up at the start so it didn't seem random at the end.

Looking forward to more content.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeanDMX

Great show guys! I agree with everyone that the episodes are getting better and better. I absolutely can't wait to see the show in HD. Congrats on your contract. I am looking forward to season 1!

Can you guys talk about Killzone 2? I'm really on the fence with this one. Looks great but I have so many games that I haven't even finished yet and I'm not sure if I should pick this up.

Eric

I haven't watched the episode yet, but I noticed Shoe is in it. Just in case there is any doubt in your minds, the answer is yes, he does make everything twice as good.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAJ Jenkins

this show just gets better and better. i'm glad someone with money recognized your guy's talent

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiles Koons

Great show guys! I love the way CO-OP is turning out. Also a big congrats on the paying gig i can't wait so hear who it is!

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLazarusReturns

Once again an awesome show, you guys. I can't wait fro season 1...lets hope this "in a big way" is what I think it is...

Anyway, keep it up!

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDPS

Even though we're only 4 episodes in, Co-Op is probably my favorite gaming show/podcast. The plot threads that run through each episode are definitely better written and more creative than those of the 1up Show. Also the split screen thing where you show both gameplay footage and someone talking or a person talking and someone else's reaction make the show more visually interesting than the 1up Show was. I'm pumped to see who picked you guys up and to see the new intro. Congrats.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRoss

wouldn't it be funny if area 5 got a deal with ugo/1up lol

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiles

awesome and congratulations.
it's been great following youze guyz through what will soon be (already is) a true success!
keep up the great quality and witty...retorts. no taco bell ads plz.

Great Show as usual! I love the cammera style and how the transicion bteween images went.

Is it possible to film in the Muir Woods or in Sausalito?, I really miss seeing those places, maybe you can show the ring (where they show you events in time and how thick was the tree) in the wood where the show started.

March 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDrMnike

Awesome episode guys - good luck for the new gig. Will deff keep watching.
